What to do if your child wants to quit sports

The child successfully attended the sports section, full equipment was bought for him - and suddenly he categorically declares that he no longer wants to go there. What should parents do?

It happens that children involved in sports think about quitting everything. There are several main reasons for this:
  1. You sent your child to the sports section without taking into account his needs. Accordingly, for some time he obeyed your will, but he does not like to study there, and therefore he wants to stop.
  2. The child is just bored. This happens at all ages and even in the favorite sports section, which the child chose himself. He really can just get bored and dislike a certain sport.
  3. The child grew up and his priorities changed. For example, he wants to spend more time with friends, hobbies or romantic relationships. For teenagers, this is absolutely normal.
  4. Fatigue. Perhaps the child does not sleep enough and is generally significantly loaded. Especially if he attends not only the sports section, but also other additional classes, and is also subject to heavy loads at school. Moreover, the older the child, the greater the load, the responsibility for studying before entering the university, and at the same time, the more I want to be distracted from study and compulsory classes.

  5. The child has problems with the coach or other children in the sports section. This problem is not difficult to solve, but it can be difficult to find out its true causes, because. not always the child is ready to talk about what worries him.
  6. Parents are too demanding on the success of the child in the sports section. In this case, stress and fear of disappointing parents prevails over the pleasure of playing sports and may push you to simply quit.
  7. The child fails to achieve success in the chosen sport. Moreover, we are not talking about international competitions, cups and titles, but when, in principle, everything does not work out very well for him, the child feels like an outsider in the group with which he plays sports.

What can parents do to solve the problem?

1. Find out the real reason why the child refuses to attend the sports section. Firstly, it is worth having a heart-to-heart talk with the baby (or not quite a baby anymore). It is important to remain calm and not pressure him. If the child just wants to change the scope of sports activities, give him a choice, let him go to another section. If you have made several attempts to talk to your child, but you still cannot figure out the reason, then it is better to contact a psychologist. In a couple of sessions, the specialist will find out the motives of the child, and in a few more sessions, he will help solve this problem.

2. Assess how hard it is for your child to play sports. If he has a lot of study time, then it might really be worth taking a break and replacing sports with outdoor walks to reduce stress levels.

3. Try to negotiate with the child so that he continues playing sports if the success of the team depends on his participation. Let him get used to the fact that sometimes you need to be patient and overpower yourself in order to complete what you started. If a child as a whole tends to quit classes after a month or two, then it is better to agree already at the stage of enrolling in a sports section that it will take at least a year to go there. You can then use this convention as an argument.

4. Invite the child to change the sports section or team / coach / place of sports. Even if it was not possible to find out what exactly went wrong in the classroom.

5. Talk to the coach about what problems the child has, whether he has conflicts with peers or a teacher, what are his real successes and prospects in this sport.

6. Let the child just interrupt their activities, take a break. Perhaps very soon, looking at his sports uniform, he will remember that it was quite interesting there, and he himself will want to return to the sport.
