The doctor reviews the latest scientific research. Coffee reduces the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke, but it can negatively affect brain function.

Amazing things happen: in just a few years Russia has migrated from a tea country to coffee shops.

Now we brew about 140 thousand tons of tea a year, and coffee - already 40 thousand tons. more.

The benefits and harms of coffee: scientists have found out what is more

Coffee is in the top 3 products sold outside the home. Every third check in a canteen, restaurant or any eatery has coffee. And we already overtook Italy and France for coffee outside the home.

The leaders in coffee consumption are Finland, each adult resident drinks a decoction of about 11 kg of coffee. We are just barely cooking a pound of ground grains. But demand is growing, at about 4-5 percent per year.

Therefore, I now have special attention to coffee. You need to know its pros and cons (and genus))).

Health Benefits of Coffee

Results have been published recently research Hungarian scientists from Semmelweis University, who discovered that

moderate coffee consumption (1 to 3 cups per day) - has a very good effect on the cardiovascular system, reduces the risk of dying from a heart attack by 17%, 12% of early death from other causes. A reduces the risk of stroke by 21%.

The study was conducted on the basis of data from a large-scale project UK Biobank - the largest repository of medical and genetic data for UK residents. There is also data from specific people about the use of tea, coffee, brain volume, physical activity, etc.

Scientists recruited 468,629 participants without evidence of heart disease. The median age was 56.2 years, 55.8% were women.

The participants were divided into three groups according to their usual coffee consumption: non-coffee drinkers (22.1%), moderate drinkers (0.5-3 cups a day, 58.4%) and coffee lovers (more than 3 cups a day, 19.5%).

Using complex multivariate models, the relationship between coffee consumption and changes in human health was assessed over approximately 11 years. Results were adjusted for age, gender, weight, height, smoking, physical activity, high blood blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol levels, a person's socioeconomic status and consumption of alcohol, meat, tea, fruits and vegetables.

Also, 30,650 participants underwent an MRI of the heart to assess the structure and function of the heart.

It turned out that compared to participants who did not drink coffee at all, those who drank moderately and daily had better heart function.

When coffee is harmful to health

There is one more interesting study based on the same data from UK Biobank, which shows that exceeding 3 cups of coffee a day is not in our interests.

Were selected 17 702 participants aged 37 to 73 years. A study found that people who drink six or more cups a day have the likelihood of developing dementia is 53% higher. The reason is a decrease in the volume of the brain, and both gray and white matter "dries out".

So how much coffee can you drink per day

Actually, the main question that interests me now is how to measure out these healing 1-3 cups. The dishes are different for everyone. I found data that in one teaspoon there are about 5 g of ground coffee and 60 mg of caffeine. Scientists talk about doses of up to 170-200 mg of caffeine per day.

Of course, a lot depends on the roast and the type of coffee. Also, the strength of coffee hides milk - and it is known that Russians love cappuccino.

Whatever one may say, it turns out that you have to limit yourself one to two cups a day. And then an overdose.

And, of course, you need to take into account the state of the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys - with some diseases you do not need to drink coffee at all.
