In the middle of summer, Orthodox Ukrainians will celebrate two major holidays. Both of them do not belong to the category of state and do not give us the right to additional rest. Nevertheless, they are considered quite significant in the church rite.

7 july believers celebrate The Nativity of John the Baptist (or John the Baptist). This is the greatest prophet in the Christian tradition, who predicted the coming of Jesus Christ, and the loan baptized him in the waters of the Jordan River. Prophet John was born in the family of an elderly Jewish priest Zechariah six months before the birth of Jesus Christ. His mother Elizabeth was a distant relative of the Virgin Mary. Interestingly, the Nativity of John the Baptist is one of the three birthdays celebrated by the Orthodox Church. Besides him, believers celebrate only the Nativity of Christ and the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.

July, 12 celebrated Day of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. It is celebrated not only by Orthodox Christians, but also by the Greek Catholic Church. These are two completely opposite followers of Christ: the simple and illiterate fisherman Peter, who spent three years of his life near the Savior, and the learned theologian Paul, who for a long time considered the teaching of Christ heresy and believed in him only after his Resurrection. Why does the church honor these different saints on the same day? Both of them until the end of their days were ardent preachers of the Christian faith and ended their days with martyrdom. Peter was executed on July 12, 67, and Paul was executed on the same day exactly one year later.

True, according to historians, our ancestors had it timed to The summer solstice. On June 7, it was postponed "automatically", with the transition of the Slavic countries from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar (old and new style). It is believed that on this day, nature has a special magical power: water, herbs and trees can charge a person with health and energy for a whole year.

Our ancestors believed that on the night of Ivan Kupala (from July 6 to July 7) you can't sleep: at this time you wake up any forest and water vermin (werewolves, wood goblin, mavki, water) and can easily drag along sleeping. Therefore, there was a tradition to burn fires and walk noisily until the morning in order to scare away evil spirits. There was also a belief that on that magical night one could get incredible wealth - it was only necessary to find a fern flower in the forest, which appears once a year.
