On the eve of Embroidery Day, we decided to recall the traditions and history of this holiday. They also picked up congratulations for this day and beautiful poems about the sacred meaning of embroidery for every Ukrainian.

Embroidery day: the history of the holiday

Traditionally, Embroidery Day in Ukraine is celebrated on the third Thursday of May. This year, the memorable date falls on the 20th. This is one of the youngest holidays of independent Ukraine: they began to celebrate Embroidery Day since 2006. The idea arose spontaneously, from a flash mob of students in Chernivtsi. Once the writer and journalist Lesya Voronyuk simply invited her classmates at the university to come to study in embroidered shirts. At first, only a few dozen people wore ethnic shirts, but then a wave swept through all universities, schools and kindergartens. For several years, the local student action reached the all-Ukrainian level and acquired the status of a national holiday. Now Embroidery Day is celebrated throughout the country and abroad, in the Ukrainian diasporas around the world.

Thanks to the idea of the students, embroidered shirt has turned from history crushed by dust into a modern trend. Now everyone, young and old, willingly dresses it, not only on holidays, but also on weekdays. And this not a thoughtless tribute to fashion: with the help of shirts embroidered with ethnic patterns, people emphasize their belonging to the nation, preserve and enhance the Ukrainian cultural tradition. On the eve of Embroidery Day, children in schools and kindergartens are told about the history and traditions of Ukrainian embroidery, explain what is the power of an embroidered shirt and what is hidden in beautiful patterns. This unobtrusively and very delicately instills in the child respect for national symbols, gives him the opportunity to feel like a part of an ancient and wise people.

Interesting facts about Ukrainian embroidery

Embroidery patterns are considered a powerful talisman against troubles / istockphoto.com

  • Embroidery for our ancestors was not so much clothing as powerful amulet from troubles, illnesses and misfortunes. That is why it was impossible to buy it in ancient times. It was believed that only a close person should embroider a shirt: at an early age, this is a mother, and at an older age, a girl prepared an embroidery for herself and for her future husband.
  • Despite the generally accepted rules of embroidery, each region of Ukraine had its own, special combinations of patterns and colors. Therefore, at large events (for example, at fairs in large cities), it was always possible to accurately determine by clothes where a person was from.
  • Traditionally, the shirt was embroidered on the throat, solar plexus and chest. It was believed that in this way you can protect the most vulnerable places on the human body. At the same time, great attention was paid to the accuracy of the embroidery: there should have been no knots on it either in the front or in the back. People believed that knots can "confuse" a person and cause irreparable mistakes and misfortunes in his life.
  • It was impossible to start embroidery just like that. Before embroidering a shirt for herself or a loved one, a woman had to fast and confess. During embroidery, it was imperative to pray and "whisper" good luck and strength for the person to whom the embroidered shirt was intended.
  • It was forbidden to embroider whatever came to mind on clothes. Embroidery patterns were regulated and divided into 4 large groups: geometric, plant, animal and anthropomorphic (human-like) ornaments. Floral ornament (flowers, leaves, branches and fruits of viburnum) was most often applied to women's clothing, but geometric patterns were an attribute of men's shirts.
  • Each color used in embroidery has its own symbolic meaning. Red has long meant love and joy, and white - purity, innocence and purity (in many regions of Ukraine, shirts with white embroidery could only be worn by unmarried girls). Yellow symbolizes wealth, prosperity and luck, while blue brings purification, good health and peace of mind. Black color in embroidery has two meanings - it can be a symbol of fertile land, or it can be a sign of longing and sadness. Shirts completely embroidered with black threads were considered a sign of great sorrow.
