Why there were fewer heart attacks during the war

There is an opinion that atherosclerotic plaques decrease from hunger. The medical literature rarely refers to this, and when it does, it usually refers to Norwegians.

By the forties of the last century, the mortality rate from heart disease was constantly increasing among Norwegians. But from 1940 it suddenly began to decline. Maybe, of course, some of the Norwegians were mowed down in the war, and the causes of death have changed, but the fact is taking place. This became especially noticeable after 1945, when the number of heart attacks exploded again.

It is believed that this is due to the fact that the Norwegians ate half the fat during the war, and the oil they ate was often mixed with all kinds of fish oils. Well, the fish itself had to be eaten instead of meat. Before the war, the Norwegians indulged themselves with 100 grams of fish a day, and during the war they had to eat 300 grams. In order not to die of hunger.

This case was studied in detail only in the early eighties. The eyewitnesses were still alive, and scientists had already learned a lot about atherosclerosis.

They say that the ocean fish in the amount of 600 - 900 grams per day acted on the then cores in about the same way as a special drug that suppressed the adhesion of platelets in the blood.

Personally, I would not bear that much fish, but Japanese fishermen and their families ate about the same. They still have records for life expectancy there.

The Norwegians at that time, of course, ate less milk and butter, but it was clear to scientists that atherosclerosis could not recede so quickly. So it wasn't about cholesterol.

Scientists decided that if mortality from a heart attack decreased already in the first year of the war, it was more likely due to blood clotting.

On the one hand, a frenzied amount of fish suppressed the process of platelet adhesion, and on the other On the other hand, the lack of dairy products did not allow platelets to receive the fatty acid. The benefit is twofold.

I'd also like to add that fish can be a good source of calcium, so the Norwegians without milk have not suffered much.

In short, hunger may be beneficial for atherosclerosis, but not always in an obvious way. So I don't advise you to go hungry especially for this business.
