Crack on the thumb: how to prevent this when you do your own manicure

Hello my dear readers! :-)

Many of you have asked to continue with the manicure tips section. Today I would like to touch on the topic of safe processing of nails and applying gel polish.

And we'll talk about the thumb. A trouble can happen to him, as in the photo below.

The thumb has a special structure. Unlike the others, it has one phalanx less, and the matrix itself (nail root) is located closer to the hole. If someone is not familiar with the terms "matrix" or "hole" - the diagram is below to make it easier to imagine.

Diagram of the structure of the nail. Here, the base of the nail is the matrix. A kind of harvester of living cells, from which the formation of the nail begins

The thumb hole is very soft and can be easily damaged.

Damage to the thumb hole can lead to onychorexis - that's exactly what is in the photo above. The integrity of the nail is broken, this leads to longitudinal splitting of the nail, as if it burst.

I must say right away that despite the terrible name, onychorexis is a defect, not a disease. It is mainly formed due to injuries or frequent contact with chemistry (this is often encountered by printing workers who work with silk-screen printing, paints, etc.). Less often - due to a skin disease or on a nervous basis.

To prevent the nail from "bursting" at the base, it is necessary to work very carefully with the cutter; in the central part of the cuticle of a large nail, do not go to a depth of more than 0.5 mm. Apply the coating closer to the cuticle, it's safer. Open the pocket very carefully with an orange stick or a pusher so as not to damage the hole. I repeat, the thumb hole is very soft, even if you press on the lower part of the hole - this can deform the nail, it will grow in waves.

If onychorexis appears at the base of the large nail, then it remains only to wait until it grows a little down and carefully clean it with a nail file (drive it almost through the air), and the master recommends strengthening the place itself acrigel. Try to keep your hands warm, less contact with cold air and ice water. Use cuticle oils and moisturizers (the ones you use on the face are better).

Onychorexis is not a reason to panic. This form of nail dystrophy is familiar to basketball and volleyball players, they hit the ball hard, take a rough pass, the thumbnail is injured.

But if your handles are not exposed to any rough contacts, and the nail at the base has "burst", while this has happened repeatedly, this is a serious reason to visit a dermatologist.

All good mood and take care of your nails!
