One of the problems with dog shelters is that most people want to get a purebred or beautiful dog that would be raised and have no health or behavioral problems. In Europe and the United States, people often look for elderly dogs to whom they want to give a home and love, but for Russia this is a rarity. Last year, a story took place in one of the US shelters that moved the staff to tears and became public.
Leslie Sachs came to the shelter and literally discouraged the staff with her request. So much different from the requests of most people who want to take a pet. Leslie asked to show her the oldest, ugliest dog that no one takes, even if she has health problems. Leslie recently had a dog, whom she loved very much, and she wanted to give the house to the one who needed it the most.
She was shown a seven-year-old dog named Sam, who had lived in a shelter for 6 months. Sam was already taken, but returned a month later. Obviously, the dog had some problems that the new owners could not accept. Sam really was a problem dog. She had a severe allergy, which affected her appearance: the hair was climbing in tufts, there were bald patches, bald patches and a rash.
But there was another applicant in the shelter, much more problematic and age-related. It was a 13-year-old dog, Brutus, who was about to be put to sleep.
“We mustn't let that happen!” Leslie said and burst into tears. The woman's nine-year-old daughter said that her mother is a very strong woman and that this is the first time she ever sees her crying.
Leslie had a tough choice to make. To help determine, the shelter staff spoke in more detail about both dogs. Sam needed a special diet due to allergies. She was also returned, including due to the fact that she did not become friends with the owner's dog. It was obvious that Sam did not need the neighbourhood of relatives, and that she should be the only dog.
Brutus was also already taken away and returned back to the orphanage. It turned out that he has very strong separation problems, so he cannot stand being alone. In addition, he has multiple health problems, which can be explained by his 13-year-old age. Leslie was warned that there must be a person next to Brutus around the clock, so as not to provoke him to stress and not to worsen his health.
Although the request was difficult, Leslie settled on Brutus, whom she decided to save from being put to sleep. But she could not get out of her mind Sam, which she saw first, and which no one wanted to take. I couldn't stop thinking about what would happen to the dog if she left her at the shelter.
Of course, she didn’t think long. After a while, both dogs jumped into Leslie's car and headed to their new home. Leslie has a three-story house with his own yard, where two dogs have room, and where they will spend as much time as they have allotted.
Later, the shelter workers learned that this was not the first time Leslie gave a house to elderly and problematic dogs. Throughout her life, the woman took about 50 dogs from the shelter, which lived out their days with her.
