Earlier, Independence Day was celebrated on July 16, when the deputies adopted the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of the country. The date of adoption of this act is considered the day when the country began to exist in its present form.
Why isn't Independence Day celebrated on July 16?
Ukrainian legislators decided to change the date later, proceeding from the fact that at the all-Ukrainian referendum, citizens supported with their votes the Act of Declaration of Independence, and not the Declaration.
The date of August 24 was fixed in the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of February 20, 1992.
