Even if cells with genetic mutations appear in the lungs, they will gradually be replaced by healthy and new cells. We tested 16 smokers who quit cigarettes. About 96% of the cells in their lungs have mutations that nonsmokers don't. Moreover, 25% of cells had cancer-related mutations.Over time, the number of healthy cells began to grow even in heavy (formerly) smokers. This confirms the fact that the lungs are able to recover!
