Overweight and vision: how are they related?

In the modern world, being overweight is a serious problem that many people face. There are countries where obesity affects up to a third of the population! This is an incredibly large number and the trend is that overweight people will become more and more. Because they eat incorrectly, lead a sedentary lifestyle, experience stress more and more often, suffer from diseases that provoke a set of pounds, etc.

The cardiovascular system of the body primarily suffers from excess weight. After all, fat contains substances that provoke an increase in blood pressure. As a result, the risk of heart attack and stroke increases. In addition, the hormones of adipose tissue negatively affect blood vessels, provoking the deposition of cholesterol on their walls. And overweight also contributes to the development of diabetes mellitus, because the more fatty cells, the less his body is sensitive to insulin - a hormone necessary for the absorption of glucose into blood.

Also, when a person weighs an unreasonable amount, the load on the bones and joints increases, and problems arise with them. Plus, the spine as a whole suffers. And this is all - a very incomplete list of diseases that arise against the background of obesity.

Extra pounds and eye health

It should be said right away that our vision suffers not from the excess weight itself, but from the diseases that it provokes. A large amount of fat has a negative effect on the condition of blood vessels, including in the eyes. Their walls are made vulnerable, slightly damaged, provoking hemorrhages in the eyeball.

Again, it is because of obesity that diabetes mellitus often develops, as mentioned above. And this disease causes diabetic retinopathy. The latter may not manifest itself for a long time, and then once - and vision deteriorates sharply. That is why it is better for diabetics to visit an ophthalmologist more often (at least once every six months).

With excess weight, many free radicals appear in the blood, destroying the eye tissues. In addition, overweight people often lack omega-3 and vitamin A, which negatively affects twilight and color vision. They also have a high percentage of adipose tissue in their eye sockets, which means that intraocular pressure often rises and glaucoma develops.

Solution to the problem

Of course, weight loss can help in all of the above cases. But if the extra pounds appeared due to hormonal disorders, it will not be easy to lose weight. But you should at least include in the diet foods necessary for eye health: milk, fish, nuts, greens, as well as fruits and vegetables of yellow, orange and green colors, which are high in zeaxanthin and lutein.
