Hello! I have been a doctor for 21 years. My name is Georgy Olegovich Sapego. In this article I will tell you about how you can spoil your liver with medicinal herbs.
For some reason, many people think that herbal and natural must be harmless. They are wrong.
Herbs are often harmful. Herbs are especially harmful when mixed with normal medicines. And worst of all, on average, no more than 40% of people tell their doctor that they are taking herbal remedies. They hide, deceive and encrypt. So the doctor literally has no chance of warning.
There are special databases of medicines and herbal remedies like LiverTox, which can be used to test drugs for toxicity.
The liver damages about 1000 (one thousand) drugs popular all over the world. And these are just popular medicines. And there is also a bunch of rootless herbal mixtures that have no name at all.
The most important thing in this whole story is to see the full composition label on the herbal preparation. Then you can check. And if it’s just "tea" without any labels, then there is a chance for some unknown reason to damage the liver.
Well, even the truthful promises of the manufacturer of some "tea" are not a reason to drink it. That is, if tea "saves you from scurvy," then there is no point in buying it, because a normal person does not have scurvy under normal conditions.
Poisonous herbs, heavy metals, microbes, and potent medicines can get into tea with a large number of components.
About every third herbal preparation contains something dangerous that should not be there. Even with the same proven manufacturer, sometimes different batches or series of plant products can vary greatly.
How often the liver is unfastened
Americans believe that of all cases of toxic liver damage, approximately 15 - 20% are associated with herbal preparations. It is difficult to assess accurately because people are lying.
How does it happen
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice may appear. It happens that the head suddenly refuses, or bleeding begins.
The saddest thing is that people sometimes try to treat liver diseases with toxic herbs.
How to suspect
If, before taking the herbal preparation, there were no diagnoses related to the liver, and suddenly the tests deteriorated, then this is very similar to poisoning.
More often, after discontinuation of the drug, everything is restored. Although it happens that the damaged liver suffers for some time, and only then the tests return to normal.
The easiest way to figure it out is when after the "herbs" appeared nausea, vomiting, weakness, pain in the right hypochondrium, itching of the skin.
After repeated doses of a toxic herbal preparation, each subsequent poisoning begins brighter and more severe.
There is a list of popular but potentially toxic herbal mixtures
Some of them have been spotted many years ago. I will give examples of a popular poison.
Asian The most frequently complained about "brand" names:
- "Jin Bu Huan";
- "Ma-Huang".
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids. They are found in a bunch of different herbs that can be identified by their Latin names. If you find something similar, and you are not all right with the liver, then it is better not to use them:
- Heliotropium;
- Trichodesma;
- Symphytum;
- Crotalaria (Leguminosae);
- Echinacea purpurea;
- Germander (Teucrium chamaedrys);
- Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus);
- Scrophulariaceae (Castilleja).
In some countries, these herbs are allowed, in others they are prohibited. There is always a chance to run into it.
Somewhere in the same place ayurvedic herbs. That is, from Indian medicine:
- Psoralea corylifolia;
- Centella asiatica;
- Acacia catechu;
- Eclipta alba;
- Vetivexia.
The French have banned ordinary Dubrovnik (Teucrium chamaedrys). It was positioned as a choleretic for liver diseases, and, as luck would have it, it damages the liver by itself.
There are many such examples. If you suspect that something has damaged the liver, then be sure to see a doctor. Herbal poisoning is a very unpleasant thing. There are no standards of care for this topic. The sooner you complain to your doctor, the more chances you have to save yourself a liver.
