Coughs can be caught from dogs

Hello! I have been a doctor for 21 years. My name is Georgy Olegovich Sapego. In this article, I will talk about bronchitis that can be obtained from pets.

People very often suffer from acute bronchitis. It is manifested by a cough. The cough may be sputum or dry. Acute bronchitis lasts one to three weeks. This is an inflammation in the lower respiratory tract. Usually the cause is viruses.

Causes

Viruses are the most common cause of acute bronchitis. This is a common cold. It is infected through coughing up drops or through dirty hands that touch the face.

The bacteria rarely cause acute bronchitis.

Any pneumococcus and other popular microbes cause coughing only in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This is a separate story. Well, or it also happens that a person, for some other reason, ended up in intensive care, and he was infected with an infection in his throat when a tube was inserted there.

Whooping cough

If the cough continues for a long time, it could be whooping cough. It happens not only in children, but also in adults.

If you heard whooping cough in children, then you will not forget. This is a paroxysmal cough that repeats many times in a row during the same exhalation.

And then on exhalation there will be several such cough jerks, and then the air in the lungs ends, and the patient takes a sharp breath. The throat is swollen, the larynx is spasmodic, so a howl is produced instead of inhaling. We call it a reprise. The Americans call it a howling cough because of that terrible sound on inhalation. In short, if you have heard, then you will not forget.

In adults, by the way, this kind of garbage also happens.

Dog cough

An interesting thing. There is such a canine disease, which is called "kennel cough" or "aviary cough". It is caused by a bacterium similar to the causative agent of whooping cough.

It used to be thought that only people with immunodeficiency who constantly work with animals could pick up such an infection. Then it turned out that with normal immunity, you can also get sick.

If you delve into this story, it turns out that the first mention of the infection of people with a dog's cough appeared at the beginning of the last century. Then several scientists picked up an infection from laboratory animals.

This infection is similar to whooping cough. When the children in the village catch a howling cough from pigs or dogs, no one will guess that this is an animal infection. All will be blamed on whooping cough. Canine cough is said to be a highly underestimated cause of acute bronchitis.

This canine infection has two unpleasant properties. First, it forms biofilms. A biofilm is a colony of microbes that cover themselves with a mucous mass. So they are more difficult to wash, and antibiotics also penetrate poorly into mucus. Such a microbial colony in someone's nose can spread the infection to others for a long time.

Secondly, the canine infection, unlike whooping cough, is able to survive in the wild. She doesn't need a dog or a pig. This dirty trick can sit in some puddle and wait a long time for its victim.

What is the conclusion

Viruses usually cause acute bronchitis. Therefore, it is not treated with anything.

Vaccinate children correctly against whooping cough. Consult your doctor. If the doctor thinks that you yourself need to be vaccinated against whooping cough, then do as the doctor says.

Don't kiss piglets, dogs, and rabbits.

If you kiss and get a cough, then it could be a real canine infection.

Vaccinate your dogs. There are vaccines for dog cough. Ask your veterinarian about them.
