WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the name of the coronavirus, giving a specific the identifier of a disease that has been confirmed in over 42,000 people and caused over 1,000 deaths in China. At least 400 cases have been reported in 24 other countries, with one person dying.
In choosing the name, WHO consultants were guided by the type of virus causing the disease. Tedros explained that Co and Vi are derived from coronavirus, with the D at the end of the word representing disease, and the number 19 representing 2019 when the first cases were noticed.
