Church holidays in December 2021

One of the main church holidays in December - St. Nicholas Day / istockphoto.com

There won't be many church holidays in December. One of the most important dates for Orthodox Christians this month is considered Introduction to the temple of the Most Holy Theotokos (December 4). According to church canons, it was on this day that Mary was brought to church to serve the Lord. At that time, the girl was only three years old. This holiday refers to the twelve, that is, it is celebrated with special respect. On December 4, all believers go to church without fail and pray to Our Lady for the health of all family members. On this day, you cannot quarrel and argue, do hard physical work. Better to dedicate it to your family (it's not in vain that World Hug Day falls on the same date).

December 13 has Day of St. Andrew the First-Called. This holiday was greatly revered by our ancestors. From ancient times it was believed that on St. Andrew's Day it was possible to receive from God forgiveness of all sins and to beg for health for the year ahead. And here are the unmarried girls on the night of Andrew wondered at the betrothed. The easiest way is to go outside and ask the name of the first person you meet. What is his name - so, according to legends, the girl's future husband will be called.

The brightest and most joyful holiday of the Orthodox Church, which is expected in December not only by children, but also by adults, is St. Nicolas day. This is the day of remembrance of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which falls on December 19 and marks the beginning of the “season of gifts”. All children know the story that only obedient children receive gifts for Nicholas, but a good saint brings a rod for edification to mischief-makers and hooligans. "Winter" Nicholas (except December 19, the Day of Remembrance of Nicholas the Wonderworker is also celebrated in the spring, May 22) is also known for fulfilling the wishes of adults. More precisely, it provides invisible support to everyone who reads about it. Therefore, on this day, you must definitely go to church and light a candle at the image of the saint.
