Ukraine was allowed to vaccinate children against coronavirus. What vaccine will be used, who should be vaccinated, and under what conditions can a child receive a “medication”?

Recently, the Ministry of Health "opened" vaccination against coronavirus for young Ukrainians from 12 years old. Previously, only children with certain medical indications, but now the desire of the parents is enough to receive the vaccine. A child can be vaccinated against COVID-19 at any vaccination center and, according to the order of the Ministry of Health, they have no right to refuse you. However, there is a list of cases in which you should still refrain from vaccinating a child.

The vaccination of children against coronavirus is approved in many countries around the world. Most countries vaccinate children from the age of 12, but there are those where vaccination against COVID-19 is allowed for preschool and primary school age. For example, in Israel, babies from 5 years old have been vaccinated for a long time. And a few days ago, vaccination for children from 5 years old was allowed in the United States. The reason is simple: in developed countries (where more than 70% of adults are vaccinated), it is children who remain the main carriers of the infection. In addition, the vaccine helps to protect against aggressive disease, which

In Ukraine, vaccination of children against covid was approved back in August. However, the child must have had good reasons to be vaccinated. This is a high risk of complications of the disease against the background of chronic or oncological diseases, moving to another country for permanent residence or having the first dose of the vaccine (for example, if the child was vaccinated abroad). Because of this, many Ukrainians could not vaccinate their children: they were refused due to the fact that the child had no indications for vaccination.

At the beginning of this month, the situation changed. The NTGI (National Technical Group on Immunization) Commission has assigned children over 12 years of age to the vaccination priority group. Taking into account how COVID-19 is spreading in Ukraine, the Ministry of Health approved this decision. Therefore, today "among children from 12 to 17 years old, it is recommended to vaccinate regardless of belonging to the risk group" (order of the Ministry of Health). For this, only one vaccine, Comirnaty from Pfizer / BioNTech, is allowed, with an interval between two doses of at least 14 days.

On the basis of the order of the Ministry of Health, any child from 12 to 17 years old today can himself (if he has a passport) or with his parents come to the vaccination center and get vaccinated. They can refuse him only in two cases: if there is no vaccine or if he has contraindications for vaccination. A serious allergic reaction to the first dose is considered to be the main trigger for the second dose of vaccine. Also, do not give a second vaccination to those children who, after the first developed myocarditis or pericarditis. But the introduction of the first dose should be postponed if the child has been ill with covid and received a complication in the form multisystem inflammatory syndrome.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health promises that no one will insist on mass vaccination of children. Senior citizens (age 60+) and unvaccinated adults continue to be of higher priority. If, in conditions of increased demand, a shortage of vaccines begins, in the first place it will not be children who will be vaccinated, but the older generation. “The Ministry of Health does not focus on vaccinating the maximum number of children. Now there is a sufficient number of vaccines, so the NTGI has expanded this norm, ”explained Alexander Zaika, head of the National Immunization Program of the Center for Public Health to reporters.
