Christmas Fast begins at the end of November / istockphoto.com
There are not so many church holidays in November. One of the main dates that Orthodox Christians should remember is November 28. From this day begins Great Christmas fast, which will last exactly 40 days, until January 6th. This is the last of the four "major" posts of the calendar year, but Christmas post not so strict in comparison with Easter or Dormition fast. Almost all the time, believers are allowed hot food (in vegetable oil), fish can be eaten every week, and wine can be drunk on weekends.
On November 4, believers celebrate Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. This is an amazingly powerful image, which is usually presented for baptism and weddings. Before this icon, people pray for healing from diseases, family well-being and the birth of children. It is also customary to bless newlyweds with it for a long and happy life.
On November 6, it falls Dmitrievskaya Saturday. This is one of the special memorial days, which in the church calendar are usually called parental Saturdays. On this day, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of their deceased relatives. It is customary to go to church, light candles and give alms to those who need it. After the church, on this day, many go to the cemetery and leave flowers and food on the graves of loved ones.
On November 21, the Orthodox Church honors the Archangel Michael and his assistants, the angels. According to church canons, this day is called Cathedral of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Forces, but the people call him simply - Michaelmas (not to be confused with the Mikhailov miracle, which is celebrated on September 19). It has long been believed that in Michaelmas people are being rewarded for their deeds over the past year. Therefore, the holiday had to be spent with dignity. Usually people went to church in the morning, distributed alms to the poor, and commemorated the dead. Also, on this day, it was necessary to make peace for all those who were in a quarrel. By tradition, relatives gathered at the same table to forgive each other's grievances and start a relationship "from scratch."
