Perfume disappointments happened to everyone. And the most unpleasant thing is when this disappointment turns out to be our new purchase. It hits both mood and wallet. Have you ever experienced that you test a perfume in a store and just fall in love, but then you can't wear it? Either you don't like it, or it tires you, or some nasty note slips out that spoils everything! Why is this happening and how to avoid it? Let's figure out what to do.
Choosing the right scent
If you put perfume on a blotter in a store, and then go to the checkout, there is a big risk of disappointment. Especially if the perfume is complex, or it has a powerful base. It is wrong to draw a conclusion about a scent by how it unfolds on paper.
Sometimes I come across the opinion that the owners of cold skin can understand from the blotter how the scent will unfold on them. That hot leather gives a different disclosure of notes, but the disclosure of aroma on cold leather and paper is similar. In my case, this is fundamentally wrong. I have cold skin, and the sound on it and on paper is different.
Always test the scent on your skin! This will give you the most complete picture of how it will sound on you. There are wonderful women who buy their fragrances without a test on the skin, but if you are capricious, like me, and do not want to be mistaken, apply it all the same.
They put the scent on my wrist and left the store. Because perfumery fragrances, smells of other fragrances can confuse the table.
We give time
The aroma is non-linear, it can change as the notes unfold. To put it very roughly, first we hear the top notes more clearly, then the middle (heart), and at the end the base notes. Of course, this is a little exaggerated, but this is the essence. Therefore, it is wrong to draw a conclusion from the first notes, you have to wait for the full disclosure of the aroma, the chemistry of each note with your skin.
Plus, there are such aromas that at first sound stifling, screaming, terrible. And they need a little time to see their beauty. Well, this topic is already another article, of course.
I usually need a couple of hours, of course, many scents are understood faster, but in general I like to immediately appreciate the persistence.
Another tip: if you usually wear perfume on your neck, test on your neck. Otherwise, there is a risk of acquiring a cool scent from which you will get tired. This has happened to me more than once. It sounds like a beautiful sound on the wrist, but then it begins to choke, tire, or even cause a migraine.
The season decides sometimes
There are both universal and seasonal fragrances. And it often happens that if you don’t guess the season, you’ll be lost. In warm or even hotter weather, rich, thick, bright aromas can serve as a weapon of defeat. And in the cold, some aromas are lost, or they open up prickly, metallic notes can creep out, and so on.
Therefore, if you bought a beautiful winter scent in a store, put it on yourself and went into the summer heat, disappointment will catch up with you. The higher the temperature, the quieter the aroma should be.
Let stand (or infuse)
It so happens that a newly bought perfume needs a little rest from the road. Especially if there were sharp changes in temperature. I read different opinions on this matter - some argued it from the point of view of physics and chemistry, others smashed these arguments from the same scientific facts.
Speaking personally about my experience, sometimes the scent really needs to stand a little. It is getting prettier! So it was, for example, with Mon Guerlain Guerlain, I was really disappointed, but after a week he became great. It happened in a week or in a day, I did not check.
And further. Never buy a fragrance because of a beautiful advertisement, because it is fashionable, popular, loved by many, and so on. Focus on your personal feelings, because perfumery is a very subjective and individual thing.
