Tea bags are easy to use and practical. However, tea bags have one big drawback: when brewing such tea, micro and nanoparticles of plastic are released.
A few months ago, scientists at McGill University in Canada studied tea bags. They published the results of their research on the pages of the prestigious journal Environmental Science & Technology. Their article shocked the population.

Why are tea bags dangerous?
The fact is that when pouring tea bags from one bag, about 1.6 billion microplastic and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles get into the water. The vast majority of them contain polypropylene.
Canadian scientists also tested how substances released into water affect living organisms. The experiment was carried out with the participation of aquatic daphnia Magna (Daphnia Magna). The arthropods survived, but some anatomical and behavioral abnormalities were observed. This worried scientists. Now they are trying to determine what effect microscopic plastic particles have on a person. Researchers speculate that the plastic particles of tea bags may have a detrimental effect on the human endocrine and reproductive systems. They also litter the planet.
What is the alternative?
Tea has already appeared on the market, the bags of which are made from environmentally friendly and biodegradable material. One of the largest British tea brands can boast of them, which introduced a tea bag made entirely from natural plant materials. This was not an easy task, since the polypropylene used earlier did not fall apart when poured with boiling water, unlike natural material.
The British tea company has invented a new durable natural material from banana, namely a blend of abaca, a durable fiber, extracted from the shell of the leaves of the fruit, and a biopolymer made from genetically unmodified vegetable raw materials.
So the British can boast of plant-based pouches that are biodegradable, unbleached and non-GMO. The brand has been using them since 2018. After brewing tea, such a bag can be safely thrown onto the compost. It decomposes and does not emit harmful substances, and therefore does not harm the planet.
