The season of compotes and smoothies has come. Can I give them to babies? What drinks are forbidden to give to children under one year old: we deal with the pediatrician

In hot weather, you need to drink more fluids. Everyone knows this axiom. Therefore, many mothers in the summer try hard to "solder" their child. Not only water is used, but also other drinks that are more tasty for children - juices, smoothies, compotes, adapted teas. But, if there is no ban on clean drinking water (it is impossible to drink the baby), then all other liquids have their own strict age restrictions. Pediatrician Tatiana Denisova on his channel in Telegram he tells what categorically it is not necessary to water babies under one year old.

Fruit juices and smoothies

The modern baby food industry offers to give babies fruit juices, starting almost at three months. But here's the paradox: in the WHO recommendations for the first complementary foods, there is no

not a word about juices for babies. Even for the age of 7-12 months, there are only "chopped raw vegetables and fruits." In packaged juices there is nothing useful for the child, only sugar and preservatives (yes, even in the now popular "direct squeezed" drinks). And their sweet taste can discourage a child from eating insufficiently sweet foods (for example, the same berries).

Homemade smoothies made with natural ingredients are undesirable for the same reason. They have a very high concentration of fructose (or fruit sugar). If in pure form your baby can eat three or four strawberries, then for a glass of smoothie you use 10-15 berries. As a result, you will not get a vitamin cocktail, but a drink with a high glycemic index that is harmful to the child. If you really want to, you can give the baby a smoothie in a very diluted form: dilute it with water about 1:10 and let's drink from a cup.

Carbonated drinks and cocktails

Everyone knows about the dangers of sweet soda for children. This is a real bomb that simultaneously hits dental health, blood sugar and gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, carbonated drinks are strictly not recommended for children under 3 years of age. And ideally, do not give them to a child of any age at all.

With children under one year old, a separate conversation - even a small sip of soda can lead to unpleasant consequences. The bubbles of carbon dioxide so beloved by children cause belching, which causes the contents of an immature stomach to be thrown back into the esophagus. At best, the baby will suffer from heartburn and abdominal pain. At worst, esophagitis (inflammation of the lining of the esophagus) will develop.

Cow's milk

A baby under one year old does not need cow's milk and is not useful / istockphoto.com

We all drank cow's milk and grew up as healthy as calves. This argument can still be heard from grandmothers who advocate the introduction of milk into the child's diet. At the same time, they seriously consider the so-called "fresh" milk - natural, homemade, only "from under a cow" to be the best of the best. Firstly, such a drink can be seeded with a huge number of microorganisms. And it is not known how they will behave in the human stomach. Therefore, even adults can drink homemade fresh milk only after preliminary boiling.

For babies cow's milk is not recommended give in principle. Even boiled, even after industrial pasteurization. It contains too much protein and fat for a small body to digest. In addition, with a glass of milk, the child receives calcium and phosphorus 5-7 times more than the norm. To remove excess of these substances, children's kidneys have to work to the limit. These are strong arguments to remove cow's milk from the list of products for babies under one year old. If you are completely unbearable, you can add a little milk to ready-made cereals from 8-9 months.

Vegetable milk

All herbal milk replacers (soy, oat, almond, pumpkin, rice) have a composition that cannot be called balanced for a baby. First, there is still no clearly developed standardization system for such analogs. They do not fall under the category of "dairy products", therefore, in the manufacture of the manufacturer focuses only on basic requirements for food safety. Therefore, in the composition of vegetable milk, you can often find flavors, sugar and other additives that are not at all useful for a child.

Secondly, some types of such milk can be simply dangerous for a baby. For example, rice milk drinks may contain arsenic toxic to infants. But almond milk (subject to its production from expired nuts) may contain a certain amount of hydrocyanic acid.

Children's herbal teas

Industrial finished products in this category clearly contain sugar. As in the case of juices: manufacturers make the child "tasty", and then we have problems with the child's eating habits, his refusal to drink regular water, high sugar levels and overweight.

As for home herbal decoctions for a child, pediatricians advise not to risk it. Firstly, the effect of different types of herbs on the child's body has not been studied at all. And if the grandmother from the early nails soldered you with chamomile, this does not mean that your child will not have an allergic reaction to this herb. Secondly, few children will drink pure herbal decoction without sugar. So, it is better to give ordinary water instead.

A separate subgroup of drinks prohibited for children includes black and green tea, cocoa, and even more so coffee. All of them contain caffeine, which, according to recent studies, is not recommended for children (attention!) Under 18 years of age. It is clear that it is very difficult to “hold out” to this age: even with all the parental vigils, the child will get acquainted with the same black tea in kindergarten. But before the kindergarten age, it is definitely not worth arranging tea ceremonies with a baby.

Homemade compotes

Homemade natural compotes from seasonal berries and fruits stand apart in the recommendations of pediatricians. Even if you do not add sugar there at all, it is still not worth giving such a drink to a child under one year old. Fructose and simple carbohydrates, which are concentrated in compotes, also spoil teeth and provoke excess weight, like a spoonful of sugar. So it is better to "feed" the berry to the child and give it to wash down with water.
