Doctor with 23 years of experience - on why it is so important to take Omega-3

Questions about the usefulness of Omega-3 flew to the PM. Quoting a recent post:

A wave of information has again gone on the Internet that it is not necessary to take Omega-3, because these acids do not reduce the risk of developing myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease and, in general, mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Refers to meta-analysis data.
Fish Is Not Enough: Why We Are Lacking Omega-3s and What to Do

Friends, in addition to cardiovascular diseases (namely, they are discussed in the meta-analysis), people suffer from a host of other diseases. For example, diabetes mellitus, other metabolic diseases, infectious, inflammatory, etc.

And there is a ton of research, including meta-analyzes, on how Omega-3 is beneficial. I detail wrote about it.

In general, one would have to get used to the fact that for each meta-analysis there is another one that strongly corrects the conclusions of the first one. This is our reality: almost all medical research is funded by different groups of influence.

Why is "just eating fish" not enough?

As for Omega-3, then these acids are essential. That is, they cannot be produced in your own body under any circumstances. And the need for Omega-3 is great.

Claims that all omega-3s can be obtained from fish, also do not stand up to criticism, because the minimum dose for healthy people of 300 mg can be obtained from fish of fatty marine species, provided that it not frozen - thawed several times on the way to the table. And the shelf life also plays an important role.

So fish oil capsules are a convenient invention that allows us to completely eliminate the deficiency of essential acids and not overeat fat (remember that Omega-3 is a fat-soluble acid).

What is the best Omega-3 form?

As for the disputes regarding forms of fatty acids and more or less effectiveness of Omega 3 in the form of ethyl esters or triglycerides, these statements are mostly speculative. No research has proven that esters are better absorbed or more effective than triglycerides. Perhaps this statement came about because more research was done using ethyl esters.

It is difficult for me to stop prescribing Omega-3 to my patients, not only because I am friends with biochemistry, but also because that more than one hundred patients have demonstrated the effectiveness of Omega-3 acids in a variety of diseases.
