A general blood test is one of the most informative for monitoring a child's health.

During the analysis, doctors determine the level of ESR. In the material we will tell you what it means and what level is considered normal.

What is ESR?

ESR is an indicator of inflammatory processes in the child's body.

In a laboratory way, the marker is determined in the process of measuring the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in millimeters. In a child with inflammation in the blood, the content of fibrinogen and globulins increases, erythrocytes stick together and precipitate, and ESR rises.

It is also noteworthy that the highest ESR indicators on the analyzes are recorded during the recovery period. That is why doctors recommend doing several tests and looking at the dynamics of ESR in order to understand what processes are taking place.

ESR rates in the blood in children

Parents, you should be aware that ESR rates for children differ according to age and even gender.

  •  For newborns, the ESR rate is 0-2 mm / hour.

  • For infants from 6 months, it should not exceed 12-17 mm / hour.
  • From 1 to 5 years, the ESR rate is 5-11 mm / h.
  • For girls from 6 to 14 years old, the indicator is 5-13 mm / h.
  • Boys 6-14 years old should not exceed 4-12 mm / h.
  • In girls after 14 years of age, the ESR rate reaches 2-15 mm / h.
  • In boys after 14 years, the ESR is in the range of 1-10 mm / h.

Sometimes ESR goes beyond the level of optimal indicators for physiological reasons, you definitely should not panic!

If the ESR rises by 10 or more units, the doctor states that the child has an inflammatory process in the body.

But the diagnosis will be made only after additional research.

An increase in ESR up to 30 m / h indicates advanced diseases that have already acquired the status of chronic.

More than 40 m / h indicates dangerous changes in the child's body.

Why is the level of ESR in a child increased?

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate is not diagnosed

In laboratory conditions, doctors only state the presence of inflammation, and there can be a lot of reasons that provoked it.

Most often, high ESR parameters in children are caused by:

  • Allergy,
  • Viral infections
  • Injuries
  • Reduced immunity,
  • The development of organ inflammation,
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Intoxication of the body,
  • Angina and so on.

In infants, an increase in ESR is also associated with a number of biological mechanisms, for example, the indicators will be increased if the child's teeth erupt.

If a child has an increased ESR for a long period, but laboratory tests have not found a problem, most likely this is his physiological norm.

As you can see, ESR is only an indicator of the problem, it is impossible to treat a high ESR, the indicators will return to normal when the parents discover the problem.
