The idea that milk affects genes might sound too far-fetched to some. But about all the nuances - in our material.
On September 1 at 19:00 on STB the premiere of the new season of the talk show "Taumnitsi DNA" will take place. The team will continue to help the heroes find out the truth through genetic testing. Project expert, clinical geneticist Lyudmila Turova, on a social network, told how breast milk the mother affects the baby's DNA.
According to the expert, infant nutrition has an impact on future health and genome. Breast milk can directly affect and "tune" the child's body, turn on or off important processes in it.
“Few people think about how infant nutrition affects future health and the genome as a whole. We know that the genome (set of genes) of a baby is laid even at the moment of conception. But it is important how, when and which genes will be turned on and really work. Unbelievable, but it is a fact. Breast milk directly affects the baby's body.
Here are the most famous mechanisms:
1) Mother's milk contains stem cells (from which almost any cell in the body can be formed), including thymocytes - the most important component of human immunity.
2) Mom's milk contains glycans that affect pathogenic viruses, bacteria that cause infectious diseases. An important point is that the glycans of a particular mom-child pair are unique and are determined by the mother's genotype.
3) And the most interesting thing is that mom's milk contains micro RNAs, which play an important role in the development of the immune system, and they also transfer genetic material from mom to child. As they enter the baby's bloodstream from milk, these molecules change processes within cells - regulate blood sugar baby, participate in the development of the liver, fight against tumors and even transmit the daily rhythms of the mother to the baby on the breast feeding ", - explains Lyudmila Turova.
