Italian scientists have discovered a new complication of COVID-19, a viral disease caused a malfunction of the thyroid gland in a person.
According to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland accompanied by an acute fever) appeared in an 18-year-old patient who had been ill coronavirus.
Before infection, the patient had no thyroid problems, so doctors concluded that the disease was provoked by COVID-19. The medical history says that the thyroid disease was discovered 15 days after the test for coronavirus, which showed a positive result.
The girl suffered a viral illness easily, but the thyroid gland functions fully recovered after 40 days.The conclusions of the scientists say that COVID-19 is capable of provoking thyroiditis, and the viral particles themselves can infect other organs besides the lungs.
