How did the eyeshadow appear, what types exist now and which ones should be put in a cosmetic bag. Read about it below.

The history of eye makeup

Eyeshadow have been used since ancient times. In ancient Egypt, they were used to protect the skin from the scorching sun. In Greece, the weather conditions were different, so local residents abandoned the protective function of cosmetics, and they did not need dark shades. But they happily wore colored makeup based on minerals and a fat base. In Rome, dried plants were added to cosmetic formulas, thus expanding the palette of shades.

Then they forgot about makeup for a long time. The idea of applying makeup was revived in Japan with the first geisha. Shadows have become a strategic object in the culture of the land of the rising sun. The red pigment was applied to the eyes of young girls. They extracted it from the saffron flower and mixed it with rice flour.

It wasn't until the 20th century that shadows came back into women's cosmetic bags in the United States. An important role in this was played by Max Factor, a make-up artist who developed cosmetics for Hollywood film stars. In the 30s, he developed henna-based eye makeup. The product soon appeared in the assortment of other brands.

Types of shadows by texture and shine

Today's beauty industry has a wide range of eyeshadows, but they all fall into two types:

  • Dry. There are pressed and baked. The former are placed in a metal case, the latter are mixed with water and baked at 60 ° C. The resulting product has a light pearlescent shine, easily adheres to the skin without crumbling.
  • Liquid eyeshadows also have several subtypes. Creams are applied with a finger or an applicator and can be in the form of a lip gloss or a wide eyeliner.

Cosmetics are also divided into types according to the presence of gloss: matte, satin and shimmery. There are also duochroms that change hue depending on the angle of incidence of light. To achieve this effect, mica is used. And depending on the purpose, cosmetics can be home and professional. In the first case, manufacturers reduce the amount of pigment, and in the second, they make the product more saturated.
