It turns out this is not a play on words. And indeed there are pathologies that, "based" in the mouth, may well bring the patient to the grave. What kind? Let's figure it out.
First is caries. Yes, yes, the same "usual". After all, this disease is nothing more than the destruction of enamel, as well as other hard dental tissues. Caries is slow, asymptomatic. And this disease, according to statistics, affects more than 93% of all people living on earth. So it will be useful for everyone to find out how dangerous caries is.
The cause of caries is most often the complex effect of internal and external factors. The main culprits are considered to be bacteria that live in the oral cavity (streptococcus, etc.) and feed on food debris. They destroy the tooth enamel. And when the process is started (which of us turns to the dentist at the very beginning ?!), cavities are formed in dentin. Further, the inflammation goes beyond their limits and affects the tissues nearby, provoking the development of pulpitis, periodontitis.
Secondly, actually periodontitis. This, as mentioned above, is a carious complication in which the infection penetrates into the canal and adjacent tissues. A purulent cavity then forms at the roots - an abscess that develops with untimely treatment into sepsis, fraught, as everyone knows, with a lethal outcome.
Thirdly, alveolitis, in which the inflammation in the hole left after tooth extraction turns into a state that threatens human life. The infection, having penetrated into the wound cavity, can provoke:
- osteomyelitis;
- inflammation of other tissues;
- lethal spread of infection throughout the body.
Fourth, periodontal disease. Although it is the least common of the above, and its symptoms may not appear for a very, very long time, in the end the disease can lead to a complete loss of the dentition.
In order to prevent the development of the above-described diseases, you only need to follow the basic rules of hygiene:
- brush your teeth at least twice a day;
- do not eat too hot and too cold food at the same time, in order to avoid the destructive effects of temperature fluctuations on tooth enamel;
- visit the dentist regularly for preventive purposes.
