To my question: "What do tulips smell like?" I received very interesting answers from different people:
“Tulips smell like dandelions,” her friend said confidently.
“They smell like tomatoes, and that's it,” said the neighbor.
"Than? Yes, they do not smell anything, ”said the husband.
Someone claims that tulips smell only in spring, warm and sunny. Connecting the scent with the holidays and other joys of spring.
I decided to figure out what tulips still smell like. And is there a perfume that gives the feeling of that very spring and warmth?
A bit of history
Tulips appeared in the mountains of northern Iran, and then gradually migrated to Europe. In the 17th century, tulip cultivation became a fashionable pastime, and by the 30s of the 17th century, tulip mania reached its climax - the tulip fever began. Prices for some types of bulbs became abnormally high, leading to the first "stock market bubble".
And then what?
If we move away from history and return to fragrances, then looking into the book "Perfumery" - the Soviet bible of fragrances by Rudolf Friedman, you can read this definition of the scent of a tulip - "it is the smell of saffron, superimposed on the background of a lily with a well-felt note of honey and tobacco». The author complains that the scent of tulips is undeservedly bypassed by perfumers.
So what does a tulip smell like?
In fact, different varieties of tulips smell completely differently. In total, there are several main groups:
1) Anisova: flowers with a spicy-spicy sweet smell, reminiscent of anise and star anise. Some varieties of this group have a pronounced sweet smell.
2) Citrus: fresh sweet scent somewhat similar to orange.
3) Fruit: varieties with a juicy apple or berry smell. There are varieties with a pronounced odor, or a slightly perceptible aroma.
4) Herbal: it is also called green. The flowers have a characteristic scent of grass and a distantly green apple.
5) Honey: a group of flowers with a sweet, viscous aroma.
6) Woody: the rarest group with a subtle woody scent.
The smell is clear, but what kind of perfume is there?
Although perfumes with a scent, as it turned out, are so diverse and not very popular in the world of perfumery, they are still there. Let's take a look at some of them.
Byredo La Tulipe - Let Spring Into Your Heart
A truly spring scent, some wear it once a year on March 8th. Not annoying, lightweight, beautiful, easy to open. Well, what else do you want to hear from tulips?! :-)
It sits well on the skin, in terms of durability - you can enjoy a light flower bouquet for 7-9 hours.
Estee Lauder Pure White Linen - "An armful of white tulips at the open window"
I wrote about it for a long time, it is ideal for April-May. Soft and fresh scent of spring flowers, harmoniously intertwined with a green apple (this is how yellow tulips still smell). Nice sillage, no hint of sea breeze air fresheners.
Many people do not understand this fragrance from the first acquaintance, but I advise you to wear it in windy weather, it will open much better.
Majda Bekkali Ziryab— "The original tulip on your skin"
At the start there is an original tulip, but the aroma, as they say, is not for everybody. Because oud and tulip give a very unusual combination: a fresh and slightly damp tulip is replaced in a couple of minutes with spicy pieces of wood with sea salt. Persistence is prohibitive!
Parfum Subtil Salvatore Ferragamo— "May bouquet of freshly picked red tulips mixed with berry juice"
On cold skin, you can clearly hear cherries on a tulip substrate, with a small drop of lilies of the valley. On hot skin, the scent is revealed much more intensely, and the union of tulip with jasmine is better heard.
