Nausea in the head and stomach

When a person recovers from anesthesia, they often feel sick and vomit. Many say that it was even worse for them than the pain itself in the operated site.

Sometimes postoperative vomiting goes away without consequences, and sometimes you have to stay in the hospital. The stitches will come loose, dehydration and all. So it's a serious matter.

The source of postoperative vomiting can be in the abdomen and in the head.

Head

Sometimes surgeons literally poke around there, and from this there is vomiting. But more often different experiences, fear and pain in the operated place act this way.

Stomach

If a person's stomach is cut open, then somewhere in the center of vomiting in the medulla oblongata, a bell begins to ring, and nausea rolls over.

The same happens if blood gets into the stomach, even if it is simply swallowed during nosebleeds. Interestingly, the exact mechanism of such vomiting has not yet been clarified.

Approximately the same incomprehensible thing comes from the anesthesia itself, various drugs and toxins. Vomiting starts, but no one knows exactly how.

Who's sick

About one in three people can twist after surgery.

It is important not to miss the situation when you felt sick even before the hospital. In renal colic, for example, vomiting comes along with abdominal pain. And there it is not immediately clear that it was a stuck stone.

Vomits women more often. Men are more resistant to this business.

The younger the person, the more likely postoperative nausea is.

If vomited after previous operations, then most likely will vomit after the next.

If a person is sick in a car, then they are more likely to get such nausea.

If a person does not smoke, then for some reason he often vomits after surgery. They say that nicotine in some cunning way tickles the very receptors in our head that antiemetic drugs act on. I somehow do not really believe in this business, because I see how younger people feel sick from smoking itself.

There is also an opinion that with cigarettes, smokers get a bunch of all kinds of toxins that enter the liver and make it work at increased speeds. In such a hot liver, drugs for anesthesia are digested faster. Therefore, smokers feel less sick.

Personally, it seems to me that smokers are used to their constant mild nausea. They had been slightly sick of cigarettes all their lives. Therefore, they have worse appetite and lower weight.

If you have to be operated on, and you have already had vomiting, then you need to tell your doctor about it. He can change a few things, and there will be less vomiting.
