A new blood test accurately indicate a lack of sleep

Chronic lack of sleep now make it possible to detect changes in gene activity that demonstrates a new blood test.

The first conclusions drawn from clinical studies conducted using the method of its own development, published in the edition of Sleep British medical researchers from the Center for Sleep at the University of Surrey.

In the original experiment, was attended by 36 healthy young men. In the study, all the subjects slept only one night. Thus, the waking period was more than 40 hours. Throughout this time, all of them take blood tests at regular intervals, as a special (especially for those objectives developed) machine algorithm Monitors "behavior" of thousands of genes, and more specifically, to monitor any changes in the level of their activity. Then the results were compared with those obtained in humans with normal sleep, as well as in patients suffering from chronic lack of sleep (less than 6 hours in a week).

As a result, the original panel, consisting of 68 genes was created. In their changes (up to 92%) with a unique computer software able to determine who owns the analyzed sample of blood: enough sleep a person or a person with normal sleep.

One of the authors of the latest experiment - Professor Simon Archer molecular biology of sleep commented on the results obtained in the following way: "Even the fact of the appearance of lack of sleep biomarkers in the blood indicates how serious the impact has on human physiology flaw sleep. "

Scientists believe: the identification of biological markers of acute sleep deprivation in the blood will open opportunities for the creation of the test in the future, allowing to accurately determine the degree of fatigue man. And this is extremely important, for example, for drivers coming in flight or miners go underground.
