A NOTE TO PARENTS: why scratching can be deadly for the child?

The incident occurred at the end of June in Lviv patient entered the hospital, diagnosed with tetanus (the child was not vaccinated). About three weeks he developed the infection, but it all started with a scratch - the boy fell and injured his knee area. Doctors believe that this is the scratch contributed to the fact that the infection got into the blood, and provoke dangerous disease.

Now the boy is under observation, fortunately, the form of the illness is not complicated. However, doctors are planning to continue to observe the child, since the characteristic of tetanus and possible complications.

The symptoms of tetanus:

• Twitching in the lower extremities,
• Uncontrolled muscle contraction.

Particularly dangerous disease is the summer, when children are actively spend their time, and their skin is not protected by clothing.

Tetanus affects the nervous system, and from the beginning manifested convulsions. If the disease is not diagnosed in a timely manner, tetanus can lead to patient death (mortality rate is 50% for severe forms).

Ways to tetanus infection

The infection can enter the body only after trauma, cuts, scratches or animal bites. From human Tetanus is not transmitted to humans. It is possible to protect against only by vaccination. In Ukraine, a vaccination against tetanus is done to children at 2, 4, 6 and 18 months and then at 6 and 16 years.

An adult must be vaccinated against tetanus every 10 years.
