Vegetable or cow: The doctor exposes misconceptions about the benefits and harms of milk

vegetable milk there are more and more stores, and the reason for this is the growing demand. There are more raw foodists, vegans, fruitarians and other people who eat differently.

- There is the myth that cow's milk is allergenic, but plant milk is not.

It is not true. They are equally allergenic - like cow, soy, and almond, and any vegetable. So you need to look for a product for yourself.

- The calorie content of plant milk is very different.. The leader is coconut (152 kcal per 100 g). And, for example, rice has a total of 60 kcal, soybean - 54 kcal, almond - 51 kcal and oatmeal - 44 kcal.

- The taste of plant milk is also very scattered., but there are also common points. Almond milk is considered the most delicious, rice milk is tasteless. Oatmeal - quite an amateur.

- Most protein, of course, is in cow's milk. And from the vegetable leader is soybean - it is inferior to the traditional one quite a bit.

- BUT Most carbs in rice milk - almost twice as much as in cow's. And least of all in almond.

- Contrary to popular belief, most calcium in coconut milk, more than in the cow.

- About the purity of the product. There will be no hormones in plant milk (The exception is phytoestrogens in soy, but these are not hormones, but substances that can affect estrogen receptors, so there is no consensus whether they harm men or vice versa), antibiotics and other substances that enter the body of cows with feed or are produced in their bodies. In the same time plant-based milk may contain pesticides and herbicides. So it cannot be said unequivocally that any group of products is safer.

- There is something interesting study kefir - from cow and soy milk. It turned out that there are more antioxidants and free acids in soy kefir. But fat content and a variety of beneficial microorganisms are more in cow. Very intriguing information was that both yogurts inhibit the activity of the AFP enzyme, which plays a key role in the development of arterial hypertension (high blood pressure syndrome). Let me remind you that at the beginning of the pandemic, scientists discovered that it was the ACE enzyme and its receptors that were the “entrance gates” of the coronavirus to enter the cell. So drinking kefir, no matter what it is made of, is useful from all sides.

- And finally, one of the most important differences. Cow's milk contains the pest protein beta-casomorphin 7 (I wrote about it here), which is not found in any form of plant-based milk. However, its amount decreases sharply after fermentation processes. That is yogurts, kefir, fermented baked milk, cottage cheese are much healthier than fresh milk.

What should be the conclusion from all of the above?

You can and should drink vegetable milk, but it is better to make kefir from cow's milk.
