Why is colon cancer more common after appendicitis?

There is such an observation. People are more likely to have colon cancer after having their appendix removed. The people found out and now they demand an explanation.

I confirm the information is correct. More often men suffer from this, and especially over 60 years old. Their risk of colon cancer jumps almost 10 times.

The further from the appendix, the more often cancer occurs. The appendix grows from the cecum at the very beginning of the large intestine. In this place, after removal of the appendix, cancer is the least common. Most often, cancer then occurs in the rectum. That is, literally at the opposite end of the large intestine.

People are usually most at risk in the first two years after having their appendix removed.

It is not yet very clear why this is happening. Well, that is, you can always come up with a bunch of different explanations with incomprehensible interleukins, which in our body are involved in different inflammation. And the inflammation itself can provoke the growth of malignant tumors. And somehow these interleukins are associated with the appendix.

Another vague explanation is the training of our immune cells in the appendix. The appendix itself is very similar to the amygdala. It contains special bases for the preparation of lymphocytes. There, lymphocytes are taught to fight the enemy. If the appendix is removed, then there will be no one to train the lymphocytes in the intestines, they will be weak, they will not be able to control anything in the intestines, and cancer may germinate.

I like a different explanation of cause and effect. It is believed that cancer grows first, and then appendicitis begins. That is, the opposite is true. Therefore, so often they find a connection. We all know that lymph nodes are swollen around cancer. Here is the same story with the appendix. It, like a lymphoid organ, reacts to cancer and becomes inflamed. And they cut him out for that.

In short, if the appendix was removed, then there is a chance that you will be bothered by adhesions, bowel cancer and other trifles. Therefore, do not hesitate to show your belly to the doctor.
