How to bring an old leather jacket back to life? You can give it to the studio or restore it yourself. It is not difficult to paint the skin at home, and the result will pleasantly surprise you

A leather blazer or jacket is the perfect outerwear for fall. The leather does not let the wind and rain pass through, retains heat well, and also looks very stylish. A thing made of genuine leather will last a long time and will not crack for the second season, as is often the case with leatherette products. The only drawback of leather is that it is easy to abrade. After a few years of active wear, any leather jacket looks shabby. However, do not rush to write it off for scrap. We have found three ways to give the old leather jacket its former beauty and gloss.

The easiest thing to do with an old leather jacket is alter it into a stylish clutch, wallet or mobile phone case. Boho lovers can try make an original leather necklace out of leather. However, these are drastic measures that must be taken if the jacket is no longer subject to resuscitation. For example, in the event that it is torn or does not fit your size.

If your jacket is still wearable and the only nuance that bothers you is the shabby appearance, you can restore it yourself. To do this, the "leather jacket" will have to be painted in one of the three ways available today:

  • aerosol
  • liquid dye
  • dry dye

Each of these methods has both its advantages and disadvantages. The main ones are the price of consumables (paint), the time that will need to be spent on processing things, and the durability of the result. The fastest and cheapest option is spray paint, but the effect will not last long. Liquid dyes can be time-consuming and can help you achieve a more lasting effect if you don't skimp on quality paint. But the most durable (but at the same time the most time-consuming) will be the coloring of the skin with special dry dyes.

Preparing leather for painting

Before dyeing the jacket, the skin must be cleaned / open sources

Whichever of the coloring options you choose, the skin must be prepared for painting. This will allow the paint to lie evenly and make any result more durable. First, empty your pockets and unfasten any textile or fur items. After that, the skin must be thoroughly cleaned. This can be done in three ways:

  • lemon juice (this method is suitable for black or dark skin; dilute lemon juice with water in a 1: 1 ratio, soak a cotton swab in the solution and thoroughly walk over the entire surface of the jacket)
  • glycerin and soap (universal way; dissolve 20 g dry or 3 tbsp. l. liquid soap in 200 ml of water, add 3 tbsp. l. glycerin; wipe the skin obtained with the solution)
  • egg white (suitable for light leather products; beat one egg white into a cool foam and wipe the surface of the leather jacket with this foam; protein after drying must be washed off with warm water)

After cleaning, hang the jacket on a hanger (to avoid creases in the skin) and leave to dry at room temperature. You can start painting only after the product is completely dry.

Spray dyeing a leather jacket

The quickest and easiest way to paint a jacket with a special spray / open sources

Aerosols for the skin are now sold in a great variety, in a very different price range. On the Internet, you can find goods for both UAH 60 and UAH 400. There is no need to save on your favorite jacket, but there is no point in overpaying. When choosing an aerosol, pay attention to the fact that the paint is water-based and free of toxic ingredients.

The advantage of aerosol painting is the speed and uniformity of the application of the coloring matter. Minus - the spray is sprayed in different directions, so you can paint not only the jacket, but also the floors or walls. Therefore, it is better to carry out the procedure on the street (if the thermometer is at least above +5), or after having previously protected the surfaces in the house.

  1. Hang the jacket on a hanger (preferably) or spread it out on the floor so that there are no folds or creases in the skin.
  2. Spray the spray onto the jacket surface from a distance of 15-20 cm.
  3. If you painted a thing on a hanger, turn it back and repeat the procedure, and then leave it to dry completely.
  4. If you have painted the jacket on the floor, the second side can only be processed after the first is dry.

Painting a leather jacket with liquid dye

Apply liquid paints to the jacket with a brush or sponge / open sources

Liquid dyes are applied to the skin with a brush or sponge. This is a longer process than painting with a spray, but at the same time the coloring matter penetrates deeper into the product, and the jacket will retain its saturated color for longer. You can buy such a paint today for an average of 150 UAH, but keep in mind that one bottle may not be enough, so it is better to take two. Again, keep in mind that leather paint should be water-based. And don't confuse professional liquid dyes (such as Perlakor, Toledo, or Leather repair doctor) with regular cream paint for bags and shoes.

  1. Hang the jacket on a hanger (preferred) or lay it out on a horizontal surface.
  2. Shake the paint bottle and pour it into a convenient container.
  3. Using a brush or sponge, gently and evenly apply paint to the entire surface of the garment.
  4. Leave the jacket for a few hours until it dries completely.
  5. After drying, treat the item with a mild soapy solution to remove any remaining paint.

Dry dyeing of a leather jacket

Powder dye produces the most visible and lasting effect / open sources

To get the most lasting and long-lasting effect, you can treat the jacket with powder dyes. For this, special aniline leather dyes are suitable. By the way, they are produced not only in the form of a powder, but also in the form of a liquid concentrate. And in fact, and in another case, they need to be diluted with water according to the instructions.

  1. Soak the jacket in room temperature water for several hours to soften and hydrate the skin.
  2. Dissolve aniline dye powder or concentrate in a little warm water and mix thoroughly until smooth.
  3. Boil about 2-2.5 liters of water and pour in the diluted paint.
  4. Wait until the water has cooled to 40 degrees and lower the jacket in it for 2-3 hours. Do not forget to turn the thing over from time to time and stir the coloring solution so that the paint is absorbed evenly everywhere.
  5. After the allotted time, remove the jacket from the dye solution and rinse in clean cool water
  6. Hang the item on a hanger and leave to dry completely.
