Sometimes people have their thyroid gland removed for some reason. Usually, the bulk of the iodine that we eat enters the thyroid gland. Some people think that if there is no thyroid gland, then iodine is not needed, and they send seaweed with fish to the furnace.

In fact, everything is more complicated there. We need iodine not only for the thyroid gland.

Iodine floats into various organs and tissues, but most often iodine deficiency is associated with problems in the mammary glands. That is, it was clear before that iodine should get into breast milk and then into the baby. But it turned out that the glandular tissue itself begins to ache without iodine.

This was established in experiments on rats, but very quickly transferred to humans and began to look for patterns.

We found that, for example, in Japan, women on average with these same seafood receive iodine somewhere 15 times higher than the upper permissible limit. They should have been poisoned, but for some reason they endure, and the likelihood of breast cancer is lower. But if Japanese women moved to other countries for permanent residence, then all the benefits of their national diet disappeared, and the risk of cancer increased.

Rumor has it that iodine in this case acts as an antioxidant and neutralizes burning free radicals.

And iodine was also specifically found in the eyes, gastric mucosa, salivary glands and other causal places. So they still haven't figured out what exactly he is doing there.

In the early seventies of the last century, scientists noticed that if human leukocytes are watered with a weak solution of iodine, then they begin to produce the thyroid hormone thyroxine. Either they made it from scratch, or they just had stocks of semi-finished products. Somehow I didn’t come across a continuation of this topic, but that old study is still being referenced. Maybe there is some sense there.

Briefly speaking

Everyone needs to eat seafood at least a couple of times a week. Well, in an amicable way, only iodized salt should be available to you. So iodine cannot be dodged even with all the desire.
