Robotics courses for kids: where to learn

Robotics courses for children have gained unprecedented popularity in recent years. Not only boys are taken there, but girls as well. Why, many parents would go to these courses with great pleasure. How could it be otherwise, because modern robotics is a whole mix of useful knowledge and skills. The guys there are taught the basics of physics and applied mechanics, design and starting programming skills. To create your own robot and make it execute simple commands - twenty years ago only the most advanced schoolchildren dreamed of such a thing.

What is STEM school and what is taught there

Robotics courses are now commonly referred to as STEM schools. This is a collective name that comes from an English abbreviation. In a STEM school, a child is taught certain skills using:

•  natural sciences (science),
• modern technologies (technology),
• basic knowledge of engineering,
• mathematics.

Such schools can specialize in more than just robotics. There are often many different courses provided. This includes web programming, 3D modeling, and the development of our own computer games. However, the basic course in every STEM school is considered to be a robotics course, which is usually divided into several age stages.

What is interesting about robotics for children

First graders (6-7 years old) are taken to the first stage, which is called "Fundamentals of Robotics". Here, the children are clearly shown the basics of mechanics, taught with them various ways of transferring movement. Boys and girls are happy to design their first robots (these are not only hadroids and cars, but also animals or household appliances), first according to schemes, and then according to their own ideas. The most interesting thing is that these robots can move and make sounds. With a program adapted for children, they can be made to follow simple commands.

Older children (8-9 years old) are taught robotics based on Scratch programming. This programming language was invented specifically for children and adolescents just a few years ago. It involves the construction of motion algorithms not with text commands, but with the help of special blocks. There are a lot of such blocks in the program, they are responsible for behavior, sounds and even logical operations that a programming object can perform. A child who masters the Scratch language will in the future understand the principle of operation of any computer program.

By the way, on the basis of Scratch, you can not only program robots, but also create your own comics, cartoons and computer games. This is taught to adolescents in the next courses in STEM schools. And if the child is more interested in robotics, there are advanced courses for him on creating unique (own) robotic models. For children from 10 years old, the design of robots on the Arduino platform is offered. It is an internationally renowned software for the development of electronic devices that many electricians and engineers work with.

Why does a child need robotics courses

Even if your child does not become an inventor or programmer in the future, robotics courses can hardly be called a waste of money. On them, children study modern technologies and understand that they are needed not only to run their fingers across the smartphone screen. Each topic and each new project is presented with the sauce of natural and exact sciences. So already at the age of 7, the kid understands the principle of the gear or screw transmission. Creating simple programs teaches children logical thinking. And a robot made with your own hands is always a subject for pride and self-confidence.
