Not stupid and will not disappear: the scientist debunked the main myths about blondes

Do you like blondes more than dark-haired ones? Will blonde babies stop being born over time? An epigenetic scientist answered these and other questions. Read it - you will definitely be surprised by his answers.

On the last day of spring, World Day of Blondes and Blondes is celebrated. In honor of this holiday, Alexander Kolyada, Researcher of the Epigenetics Laboratory of the Institute gerontology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, on his page on the social network debunked the main myths about them.

No, blondes will not die out or disappear by 2202

Despite the fact that this fake news is reprinted every year. On this topic, even the WHO made statements that, they say, do not worry, we have never said this, although we are credited with it. Light hair color is, of course, a more recessive trait, and is inferior in inheritance to darker ones. But this does not mean that blondes will die out. Although this myth has been around for over 100 years!

No, blondes are not stupid

This myth has several roots at once. There are stories about the famous prostitute of the 18th century Rosalie Duta, and the frivolous image of Merlin Monroe, and, perhaps, just replicated jokes about blondes. Perhaps this myth was strengthened at a time when hair was dyed with peroxide, and it did not look very good. And because of this, it was the dyed blondes who were considered not very smart. In any case, this is nothing more than a stereotype.

No, scientists cannot yet understand whether blondes and blondes are liked more than dark-haired.

Many experiments have been performed on this score. Some counted how many the same people in different wigs get tips, others - how often they agree to dance with them in a disco. Thirdly, how often they are picked up when hitchhiking. The data is diverging. Apparently, like the tastes of people. There are two theories here. The first suggests that blondes and blondes are simply more popular with people. The second theory says that people like rare looks, and blondes in most countries are just more rare. If this is the case, then in some place where blondes will be the majority, dark-haired ones will be more popular. Scientists have tested both theories and both are somehow confirmed. But there are always experiments where dark-haired people are more attractive. So it's all a matter of taste, fashion and design of the experiment.

No, there is no single gene for blondes.

Hair color, of course, is one of the most genetic traits, and depends little on the lifestyle, but a lot of genes are involved in this. Hair color depends not only on the presence of two pigments, melanin and eumelanin, but also on the structure of the hair, its thickness and shape. And the synthesis of the pigments themselves is also provided by a bunch of genes, each of which can influence both dramatically (making us albinos) and slightly changing the shade. In addition, in different ethnic groups, the genes of blondes are different, and can bizarrely shuffle in interethnic couples.
