"Beer belly" - the first signal to check your health
I often enough use this phrase - metabolic syndrome (MS). But my readers don't seem to realize how dire diagnoses are behind these words.
Metabolic syndrome as a concept appeared relatively recently - in 1981. So they began to call a certain set of violations, which include:
π© Visceral obesity, that is, the accumulation of fat mainly in the abdomen, when the waist circumference in women exceeds 80 cm, and in men 94 cm,
π© Violation of carbohydrate metabolism - increased glucose level (above 5.6 mmol / l),
π© Insulin resistance (violation of the sensitivity of insulin receptors to insulin itself, often expressed in a constant appetite),
π© Violation of fat metabolism - an increase in the levels of total cholesterol, low-density cholesterol and triglycerides above 1.7 mmol / L and a decrease in the level of high-density cholesterol below 1.03 mmol / L,
π© Increased blood pressure above 130/80 mm Hg
Now added to these classic symptoms:
π© Hyperurecaemia, that is increased uric acid levels (Wong Y., 2016, J. Endourol., 30 (3): 246-53.)
π© Violation coagulation system of the blood.
The diagnosis of "metabolic syndrome" is now made if a person, against the background of general obesity, has at least two of the above signs. Moreover, earlier the main criterion for MS was visceral obesity, but since 2009 all signs have become equivalent according to the American medical associations (IDF, ADA / NHLBI 2009).
I must say that any of these symptoms in a neglected state can bring a person to disability, and in the complex, such a probability increases by an order of magnitude and becomes almost inevitable.
How to treat metabolic syndrome
The best way is the most obvious. It is necessary to reduce the amount of adipose tissue in the body and use special drugs to stop the effects of metabolic syndrome.
For example, to lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, etc.
In any case, after losing excess fat, the patient's condition will greatly improve, and it is highly likely that some of the drugs can be canceled.
And, of course, it will be possible to remove the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.
Which in itself is a harbinger of cardiovascular accidents (strokes and heart attacks), sudden death, oncology and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
No wonder the second name of this disease is "Death quartet". In general, there is something to be afraid of. But we have a cure, don't hesitate.
