Recently I was approached by a pleasant young man who complained that cannot gain muscle mass, although he goes in for sports a lot and intensively.
As expected, I examined him and asked in detail about the food. Much of what he said was correct and reasonable. However, due to circumstances he drank a lot of coffee.
How avoiding coffee helped normalize hormones
Analyzes showed low testosterone and dihydrosterone in the normal range, but closer to the upper limit.
What then do not very experienced doctors do? Appoint testosterone replacement therapy. This is a fairly progressive method that can work wonders. But there is no need to rush to the appointment, since about 20 percent of patients (I speak from my practice) additional testosterone replacement therapy will only make the problem worse because there is no true deficiency testosterone, there is excessive activity of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (which converts testosterone to DHT), as in this case, or aromatase, which converts testosterone to estradiol, which is more common. And by adding testosterone from the side, we will only throw gasoline into the fire.
In general, the young man thought it was frivolous my recommendation to reduce, or better for a while, exclude coffee from his diet. But he trusted and stopped drinking coffee.
The result was absolutely amazing: testosterone increased from 10 to 15 units, and this is very important, especially if we are not talking about hormone therapy. Against this background, dihydrotestosterone decreased from 835 to 647, and estradiol decreased by one unit.
If these changes seem insignificant to someone, then he is deceiving. Often, difficult problems are solved with very simple methods that you need to know how to use. And this post is not about everyone having to give up coffee, but about the fact that everyone should strive for balance and not use anything without measure.
