Lent in 2021 for both Orthodox Christians and Greek Catholics falls in March, April and May.

Great Lent is considered one of the main ones, its purpose is not to limit oneself to food, but to prepare for the celebration of the Bright Resurrection of Christ. In 2021, fasting will begin on March 15, and it will last until May 1, when we celebrate Easter.

Traditionally, Great Lent begins on Forgiveness Sunday, in the temples at this time the expulsion of Adam from Paradise is remembered.

Lent is strict.

What is forbidden to eat:

  • Food of animal origin,
  • Milk and dairy products.
Since meat is strictly prohibited, believers try to make up for the calorie deficit with fish. However, this can be done only twice during the entire fast, on the Annunciation and on Palm Sunday.

The Church at all times allowed pregnant women, nursing mothers and children not to fast.
