COVID-19 can cause paralysis in children, but in rare cases

Scientists have found that in rare cases, coronavirus can cause paralysis in a child.

This is reported in a study by scientists University of Manchester In Great Britain. Unexpected conclusions of doctors that coronavirus is able to affect the spinal cord of children, published the edition Daily mail.

During the study, doctors examined 38 cases of COVID-19 infection in children in eight countries around the world:

  • 13 from France,
  • 8 from UK,
  • 5 from USA,
  • 4 from Brazil,
  • 4 from Argentina,
  • 2 from India,
  • 1 from Peru,
  • 1 from Saudi Arabia.

Several patients showed neurological symptoms. They underwent an MRI scan after the appearance of various signs of coronavirus, someone developed a fever, while others had malfunctions in the musculoskeletal system.

Two children were diagnosed with paralysis, the virus entered the spinal cord and provoked inflammation there. These children were hooked up to a ventilator and fed through a tube.
The same guys were diagnosed with dysautonomy, a condition when the body's ability to control the heartbeat, blood pressure and breathing is significantly weakened.

Co-author Professor Stavros Stivaros noted that reactions of this type are very rare, but can occur even after the child has completely overcome the coronavirus, i.e. be significantly delayed by time.

By the way, Australian scientists have previously proven that children are less susceptible to coronavirus.
