When a pregnant woman visits a gynecologist, he measures the height of the fundus of the uterus. What does this parameter mean and what is its norm?

Bottom height uterus measured as the distance between its highest point and the junction of the lateral pelvic bones.

This parameter shows how the size of the uterus changes and how much it corresponds to the normal course of pregnancy at a particular date.

The bottom of the uterus is actually not located in the lower abdomen of the pregnant woman, but at the very top, that is, the uterus is, as it were, turned upside down. The longer the gestation period, the higher it rises.

The height of the standing of the fundus of the uterus approximately corresponds to the weeks of pregnancy: that is, at the 11th week, it is approximately 11 cm, and so on.

Thus, according to this parameter in the first and second trimester, you can fairly accurately determine the gestational age.

It is important to remember that these indicators are to a certain extent arbitrary. If you visit your doctor regularly and he says that everything is normal, then most likely there is nothing to worry about.

What can they depend on fluctuations in this parameter:

  • physical parameters of the pregnant woman: height, weight, age, pelvic width, etc.;
  • physical parameters of the fetus;
  • the location of the baby in the stomach;
  • one or more babies in the belly;
  • genetic characteristics;
  • pathology of pregnancy.

When the height of the fundus of the uterus below normal:

  • the term of pregnancy is incorrectly set according to the last menstruation;
  • small size of the fetus;
  • prolonged pregnancy;
  • wide sizes of a woman's pelvis;
  • lack of water;
  • delayed fetal development or missed pregnancy.

Important!

Do not diagnose yourself on your own, do not rush to get nervous and imagine the worst. Any doubts should be shared with a doctor and checked with ultrasound and other examinations.

When the height of the fundus of the uterus above normal:

  • the gestational age is longer than that determined by the last menstruation;
  • the doctor measured inaccurately;
  • the pregnant woman has not emptied the bladder;
  • a narrow pelvis in a woman;
  • large fruit;
  • multiple pregnancy;
  • polyhydramnios
  • breech presentation of the fetus;
  • diabetes;
  • obesity in a pregnant woman;
  • rhesus conflict and placental edema.
