Modern cardiologists should warn their patients that the use of marijuana, legalized, by the way, in a number of states of America, carries huge risks to their health. Especially if the drug is combined with the most common drugs for cardiovascular pathologies.
Experts at the Boston Center for Cardiology and Vascular Disease warn: “smoking marijuana carries patients with problems of the cardiovascular system are completely the same risks as long-term tobacco smoking in large quantity ". Such conclusions made it possible to draw a study that used data from more than two million patients who either have used marijuana on a regular basis or have used the drug in the past, including for medical indications.
The use of marijuana and the relationship of such use with cardiovascular risks has somehow become the subject of serious scientific research. But then the evidence was modest enough to make, let alone publish any conclusions.
Meanwhile, marijuana is spreading more and more. And, unfortunately, it is used not only in the USA. Among the Russian youth, the conviction that this drug is rather “a drug that helps to fight certain diseases” is “walking”. Many people are sure that it is better to “relax like this than nothing” in our difficult times. However, doctors are sounding the alarm. And now they have accurate data that the risk of being in a hospital bed (and this is at best) with:
- heart attack;
- paroxysm of arrhythmia;
- as well as exacerbation of heart failure,
increases markedly in those who smoke drugs (in particular, marijuana, but also a number of other narcotic hemp products). And this fact is especially annoying, given that the diseases of the cardiovascular system have become very "younger" lately. That is, more and more young people are becoming patients of cardiologists.
The authors of the aforementioned Boston study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in January 2020. tables of interaction of a number of cardiovascular drugs with marijuana. Before them, no one has reduced or published anything like this. The Boston-based Center for Cardiology and Vascular Diseases is confident that their tables will be especially useful for cardiologists, as well as pharmacists who will finally be able to understand: is it necessary and how to adjust the dosage of drugs, if their patients, despite the warnings, refuse to stop using drugs funds.
