Here's how to care for curly hair. And why you should throw out the comb

In a previous article about keratin straightening my reader shared a very interesting opinion. She is the owner of curly hair, decided not to go against nature, but learned to care for them.

This inspired me to write material about the care of curly hair, because at one time on work, I very often had to deal with curly clients and select care products for them facilities. Not all curls owners know how to tame them.

In fact, caring for curly and straight hair is not much different. Traditionally, you need shampoo and conditioner. However, there are some nuances and specific mistakes in the care of curly hair, which I will talk about today.

No need to comb dry hair!

This breaks the curl, the hair starts to frizz, becomes like a dandelion. Any comb causes mechanical "mini-damage", and curly hair is already the weakest in structure.

Comb your hair while washing, when you have enough conditioner on it. Do this gently, starting at the ends of your hair and working your way up to the roots.

Sometimes it is enough to comb your hair with your fingers. If they are well hydrated, they will be less tangled, and the need for unnecessary combing will disappear by itself.

If you do have an unpleasant mug, then in no case should you tear it apart with a comb. Better to apply conditioner and some water to it, then gently untangle it with your hands.

Features of hair washing

I have already talked about washing only the scalp and hair at the roots more than once, and this method also applies to curls.

Shampoo, no matter how soft it is in composition, still dries the hair. Therefore, it will be sufficient to apply shampoo to the root zone and massage the scalp. For the rest of the hair, rinsing off the shampoo suds.

Conditioner is a must when washing any hair type. Only on curly hair is the application technique different.

Apply conditioner from the very ends, collecting them in the palm of your hand and pressing a little, as if showing the desired shape and curl. Do not spare the air conditioner, but do not overdo it either.

Rinse the conditioner off your hair gently with a gentle pressure of water (great pressure straightens the curl), leaving some of the product on the hair. Why is this necessary? To eliminate the "blown" on the head. How much to leave - everyone will decide for themselves by trial and error, for their hair type. The main thing is that the conditioner does not weigh the hair down or that the lack of conditioner does not frizz the hair.

Do not neglect products for curly hair, especially styling removers for firm curl. While not all curl products are created equal, look for products that work for you and your hair.

Hair Drying Features

Regular readers know that I am against terry hair towels (and even more so, in no case should you rub your hair with this very towel). We replace hard terry towels with silk or soft microfiber. Do not curl your hair in a towel. Gently fold the hair there, not pressing hard so that the curl is preserved.

Discard hot styling, put the hair dryer on the lowest temperature. Don't forget about the diffuser, which is indispensable for styling curly hair. If your hair dryer does not have such a nozzle, then a good old sieve will come to the rescue.

Raise your hand, who has never dried curly hair with a sieve :-) Who has not done this, I tell you. Take a sieve (not a small strainer, but such a good sieve), from the bottom up, collect the hair in a sieve and dry your hair with a hairdryer, as you do with all the strands. If you have resigned yourself, fell in love with your curls and do not want to give up the hair dryer, I advise in the future to buy either a nozzle separately, or buy a hair dryer with such a nozzle.

There is the popular Curly Girl Method, which was released in 2001 by Lorraine Massey. Many curly-haired girls idolize her for writing this book. I think all the girls who cannot accept and tame their curls should read it. But do not forget to filter the information, because 19 years have passed since the release of the book, the information is a little outdated. For example, the coffeing method so eagerly recommended in the book is not for everyone. It should be especially avoided by owners of oily scalp. And you shouldn't give up shampoo, otherwise you can get seborrheic dermatitis.
