Can smoked furniture harm us?

Hello! I have been a doctor for 21 years. My name is Georgy Olegovich Sapego. In this article I will tell you about how a smoky sofa can ruin your life.

There are three ways to get poisoned by tobacco smoke:

  1. actual smoking;
  2. second hand smoke;
  3. third-hand smoke.

They started talking about passive smoking around the 60s of the last century. At first, they worried about children whose parents smoke at home. It turned out that this is very harmful to infants.

The first major study on lung cancer from secondhand smoke was published in 1981, and by the mid-1980s, everything had already become clear. They began to find cancer, heart attacks, strokes.

At the beginning of the 2000s, Americans began to very strictly monitor tobacco smoke in various rooms and public places. Not too much time has passed since then, but there is already evidence of a decrease in the number of heart and lung diseases.

The tobacco industry tried to crap on the research results, but they failed.

What is secondhand smoke

It is also called "secondhand smoke", that is, secondhand smoke. This means that the person was not going to smoke, but for some reason breathed in tobacco smoke.

There are now about a billion people in the world who smoke. In addition, about two thirds of all non-smokers have to breathe tobacco smoke.

Two types of smoke

There are two types of smoke. One flies from a smoldering cigarette in an ashtray, and the other exhales a smoker. Which smoke do you think is worse?

Light smoke from a smoldering cigarette is worse. It forms at low temperatures, and all the muck from the tobacco flies into the air.

When a cigarette is puffed on, some of the muck burns out at a high temperature, some gets stuck in the filter, and some gets stuck inside the smoker. It turns out that there is less muck in the exhaled smoke.

So a light smoke from a smoldering cigarette from an ashtray instantly eats into surrounding objects.

Third hand smoke

This is the smoke that eats into the room. In the surface, furniture, walls. It would seem that the matter is only in an unpleasant smell, but everything is much worse.

The nastiness from such ingrained smoke gradually undergoes complex chemical transformations. Then people put their hands on these surfaces, pull their hands into their mouths, or the chemicals are absorbed through the skin. This ends with an increased risk of developing malignant tumors.

Passive smoking is easily measured quantitatively by the content of components of tobacco smoke in the air: microscopic particles of soot, carbon monoxide, nicotine, benzene.

Have you heard of benzene? It is also a component of tobacco smoke. He has blood cancer. Secondhand smoke is the main supplier of benzene. More than people get from exhaust fumes and industrial plants.

The degree of secondhand smoke depends on the proximity of the victim to the smoker. If a smoking mother holds a child in her arms, then, poor fellow, he absorbs the same acrid smoke from the smoldering cigarette with which the mother smoked.

What to do about it

It is necessary to somehow reduce the concentration of muck in the air and on surfaces.

It depends on the number of smokers, on air exchange and on some kind of cleaning devices.

All these measures were studied in detail, and it turned out that neither ventilation nor purifiers would help. It is necessary to expel smokers from the premises

And even where these smokers will tar, something must be done with the smoke. There are such smokeless ashtrays. These are air purifiers that are tailored for smokers.

There should be several stages in this process. Tobacco smoke is made up of tiny soot particles and gaseous pollutants. A very fine filter should retain soot particles.

There is a catch here. Have you heard about activated carbon in filters? He is even in gas masks. So the smoke particles are soot, that is, also coal. And they work much like activated carbon. They trap gaseous pollutants. That is, it is not enough to filter out smoke particles. It is also necessary to catch the gas that these particles will begin to emit.

Therefore, a whole bucket of activated carbon is placed behind the fine filter. It absorbs gaseous chemicals. And then after that, the coal buckets put the next fine filter, which should catch coal dust, which inevitably flies out of the coal bucket. Here is such a complex method.

Home Sweet Home

At home, everything is much easier. Scientists tested the level of cotinine in children in families where parents smoke. Remember cotinine? It is obtained in our body from nicotine. So in those families where the parents smoked at least one cigarette at home and no matter what precautions were taken, cotinine was found in the blood of the children. That is, you cannot smoke at home with any purifiers. The smoker from the house must be driven into the street.

So it turns out that a smoky sofa can kill you.
