About our dear snot, jugs and adhesive plaster

A drop

Hello! I have been a doctor for 21 years. My name is Georgy Olegovich Sapego. In this article I will tell you about small errors in useful publications.

I read the popular health articles from that blog again. The authors tried to take information from trusted sources, but something went wrong. Something was misunderstood, but something was added by ourselves. Gag does not lead to good.

These are the guys who provide sources for verification. I really respect that. Respect! But mistakes must be corrected. I'll explain everything now.

Snot in the cold

They write that this is just condensation. You can't do anything with it. You can only blot the drop under the nose with a handkerchief.

In fact, this is not condensation, but our own snot. In the cold, the nose produces more of them. The simplest explanation is the defense reflex. Our nose reacts to everything by producing snot or sneezing. He has no other means of protection. So from irritation with the cold snot also flows.

The second explanation is more complicated. I explain why this is not condensation. Water dissolves in warm air. If the air is cooled, then this water condenses into droplets.

In the frost, the water we breathe out condenses. If you cover your nose with a mitten, then moisture from our breath will condense on the cold mitten. The same moisture around our mouth and nose will accumulate on all cold objects, including eyebrows, eyelashes and a hat. But frost does not fall on the nose, and water does not condense. Because the nose is warm.

Thromboembolism

With deep vein thrombosis in the legs, blood clots can travel up to the heart and block arteries in the lungs or brain.

In fact, blood clots from the veins of the legs can enter only one artery - the pulmonary. Blood clots from the legs cannot get into the arteries of the brain (unless, of course, there is an extra hole in the heart).

To get into the arteries of the brain, the thrombus must pass through the pulmonary artery, then the smallest branches of the pulmonary artery, pulmonary capillaries, then the pulmonary veins, then the left atrium, then the left ventricle of the heart, then the aorta and only then will enter the arteries brain. It is clear that the blood clot will get stuck before reaching the capillaries in the lungs. The lungs work like a big filter. They filter venous blood.

Thrombus

Jug filter for water and limescale in the kettle

They write that the jug filter removes some impurities, but does not save from scale in the kettle.

In fact, ion exchange resin is often added to pitcher filters. It replaces hardness salts with potassium or sodium. Hardness salts are compounds of calcium and magnesium. It is from them that scale appears. They give the water a bitter taste.

The point of a pitcher filter is to make delicious tea or coffee. The pitcher filter traps turbidity, some chemicals and exchanges calcium with magnesium for potassium or sodium. This improves the taste of the water. But this water will not be safe, because pitcher filters are instantly colonized by water microbes. Water from the jug filter is needed for subsequent boiling.

If the instructions for your pitcher filter say that people with kidney disease need to be more careful, then your filter contains an ion exchange resin that changes hardness salts to potassium. People with kidney problems need to monitor the level of potassium in the diet, because diseased kidneys do not remove it well.

Kinesio taping

They write that the lymphatic drainage effect of kinesio tapes has not been proven, and the tape cannot physically affect the muscles and ligaments. Like there are too many different layers underneath.

Indeed, the lymphatic drainage effect of such a patch has not been proven, but the patch itself not only acts on muscles and ligaments, but even fractures of the femur are pulled out with it. Here the guys again admitted a gag and made a mistake. In general, taping with inelastic tape is used for a lot of different sports injuries.
