Every year there are more and more people with Alzheimer's disease, and there is strong evidence that one of the reasons for this is a change in diet, namely, excess fructose.

An endocrinologist, a specialist at the Moscow State University clinic, a doctor with 23 years of experience, Dr. Pavlova reports.

My regular readers know that I am extremely negative about the excess of fructose in our diet. I even have scientific work on fructose, published on a well-known world scientific resource. Called "The role of fructose in the formation of kidney stones."

And now the disappointing news has come: it is highly likely that one of the causes of Alzheimer's disease is fructose, which has become prevalent in food. The article was published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience.

“We hypothesize that Alzheimer's is a modern disease caused by changes in dietary lifestyle, in which fructose can disrupt cerebral metabolism and neuronal function, ”wrote a team of scientists from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center, together with colleagues from Mexico and Japan.

Glucose and fructose differ greatly in their effects on the body, although you cannot tell by taste. Glucose is used for energy production, fructose is used as an energy store. Here's the link.

Bears keep fattening up all summer, and fructose helps them a lot.

This is all easy to understand in terms of animals. Metabolism (metabolism) of fructose is a survival mechanism that has formed in the process of evolution.

In the wild, fructose is available to animals only a few months a year, and this is the most active time for gaining fat mass. If very primitive, fructose starts the processes in the body akin to hunger.

Fructose quickly satisfies hunger, and immediately initiates a brutal appetite. So that the fat gain does not stop. And the more you eat fructose, the more you want it.

The problem is, fructose is everywhere now. It is very cheap to manufacture, and according to various studies, it is found in more than 70 percent of the products sold in the supermarket. About 15 percent of our daily calories come from glucose and fructose, with much more from fructose.

That is, the process of production of salmon goes on all year round, unlike wild animals.

In many delicacies, fructose is added instead of sugar - like, it's healthier. But in fact, no.

Scientists have discovered that massive consumption of fructose leads to a breakdown of its metabolism. The production of energy in mitochondria slows down, and it ceases to be enough for the vital activity of neurons. This is associated with glucose hypometabolism, persistent oxidative stress, inflammation and also leads to progressive loss of mitochondria. That is, cells die, including neurons, and everything goes on increasing.

Alzheimer's disease (dementia or acquired dementia) is, in fact, damage to nerve cells and slow death of brain tissue.

This discovery explains a lot, including why people with obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes are more likely to suffer from Alzheimer's.

What do we do with this information?

Monitor your diet and hope that scientists will find a way to fix fructose metabolism in the human brain.
