Experts from Baylor University, located in Texas (USA), conducted an interesting study. In the course of the experiment, they found that the absence of a similar response to the yawning of another person indicates a deviation in empathy. Moreover, this symptom often becomes an indicator of a psychopath.

Hidden signs of psychopaths

What other signs have Baylor University researchers found? Scientist Philippe Vernier argues that psychopaths often have other deviations. Most often these are social pathologies:

  • impulsive behavior;
  • selfishness;
  • desire to dominate;
  • manipulative behavior;
  • lack of empathy.

The study studied 135 people. They found that individuals with the least susceptibility to yawning have a low level of empathy. The fact is that the communicative feature of yawning and a person's ability to interpret the state of another are closely interrelated. That is, they poorly read various states, including pain, fear, irritation, joy, frustration, etc.

How is empathy formed?

Of course, not responding to someone else's yawning isn't necessarily a sign of psychopathy. However, in most situations, this feature clearly indicates the presence of pathological qualities, including selfishness and aggressiveness.

Perhaps the person is not dangerous to society. But it is empathy, like other personality traits and genes, that shapes the brain and sets the vector for its functioning. Also responsible for the ability to empathy:

  • life experience;
  • education;
  • upbringing received;
  • environment.

Some people tend to be more empathetic. And this is not only a genetic fact, but also an experience gained in a social environment.

For several years, psychology and neuroscience have carefully studied the brain mechanisms that are responsible for empathy. It was possible to find out that the feeling of empathy is a complex phenomenon. It is called simultaneously by several processes. It is not only auditory perception, but also vision. In the human brain, it provokes similar processes. Even through the thoughts and letters of another person, we can feel what he is feeling. It turns out that a certain copy of the feelings felt by the other is being created.

Why is low empathy dangerous?

If the level of empathy is low, it can provoke problems in relations with relatives, colleagues, friends and neighbors. This disorder can lead to personality isolation.

A person becomes indifferent to problems, does not react to the suffering of other people, is indifferent to tears and pain. He is prone to antisocial behavior, aggression, crime. This does not mean that she is 100% psychopathic. But more often than not, just such people turn out to be maniacs and serial killers.

There are some benefits to having a low level of empathy. This quality is highly valued in times of crisis when difficult decisions have to be made. This is noticeable during wars, natural disasters, business problems, when the staff should be reduced. This is why social ethics and empathy don't always go hand in hand.
