I have a good friend, who since childhood dream of becoming a doctor. He graduated from high school with honors and entered the Medical University. Pirogov (department of "Pediatrics"), but after four years of study dropped out on their own. The thing is that he is an Orthodox Christian, which complies with the customs, traditions and positions.
All of course wondered why he resigned from the University and why do it? Most upset his father, because he was the chief doctor of surgical department of the city hospital, and predicted a great future son. For him it was a real shock. Not only surprised his mother, who raised her son from childhood and laid him in a strong faith in God.
When I met up with a friend, then I asked him - why he changed his mind to be a doctor? After all, it was a childhood dream. The answer surprised me a bit. He told me: "I want to bring good to people, and so I chose this profession. But in the process of learning realized that I could not finish my studies before the end, because I am a believer. "
As it turned out, in the course of his studies, he was not able to carry out dissections (dissection of dead people for medical purposes). This is contrary to the religious beliefs. One could agree with the teacher and skip this part of the training. But in order to become highly qualified professionals practice anatomy is required.
Yes, of course many of us consider themselves Orthodox Christians, too (in fact, including myself) are on the neck crosses, go to church and sometimes to observe the fast. But there is a part of the faithful who live it. According to them: "You can not be half a believer." For them it is the meaning of life, and everything else goes by the wayside.
On the one hand, I believe this approach is correct. Faith in God makes people more kind and humane. But ardent atheists right answer: "In order to develop science and derive new knowledge, you need to close your eyes to some things". And you will also be right! There is the eternal conflict "between religion and science."
P.S. Honestly, I do not know how many doctors are now the "real" Orthodox Christians. Many probably deeper into the faith after obtaining a degree. But the friend was not able to become a doctor. Now he took a job as a medical assistant and an ambulance benefits people saving lives.
