Appendix - a small pouch colon
It is located in the lower abdomen on the right and size similar to a finger. Sometimes the appendix becomes inflamed. This is called appendicitis. Inflamed appendix must be removed surgically. It has successfully made 120 years. If the appendix bursts, it will develop peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum) with a high probability, from which you can die.
Many people are afraid of appendicitis and even more afraid of surgery. This theme was very fashionable twenty years ago. It turned out that the uncomplicated options for appendicitis can be treated without surgery.
You can be dispensed with antibiotics
If a person with appendicitis do not have any complications, then it can be assigned to several days antibiotics and almost 90% of cases to achieve recovery. Surgeons do not like this approach, but sometimes it can be done.
Sometimes it ends badly
The fact that appendicitis may then easily happen to a man again, and there is a chance that the patient will not fall in time to the hospital.
Yet there were cases when the operation is not done and passed oncology, which could be seen and time to heal. In the appendix are sarcomas, and some other tumors. This place is difficult to find, play a role in immunity, and there can grow something unexpected.
In 2016 we conducted a large study, which was attended by many people from different countries, and found that without surgery appendicitis were treated with only 4% of cases. And that given that most cases were just uncomplicated appendicitis.
Of those cured without surgery, about 30% still had to operate throughout the year over the next appendicitis.
In good to those patients who can or have to wait to make the operation a computer tomogram of the abdomen. It is expensive, difficult, and the load in terms of radiation. Therefore particularly no bother. It is much easier and safer to do the surgery.
It is said that you can do without antibiotics
Some have even said that the matter could not antibiotics, and supportive care that people with appendicitis received in the hospital. So what's all very vague.
Appendicitis is common. Each of us has a chance of approximately 8% get appendicitis in their lifetime. And it seems that 70 - 90% such people can recover without any treatment. Only this group can not be accurately identified. So we have to cut.
Very risk of impaired people
It is risky to give up surgery in elderly patients, people with immunodeficiency or severe comorbidities. They appendicitis occurs lubricate and imperceptibly. It's easy to underestimate the severity of the condition, and the patient has a chance to die.
Interestingly it turns out the plug: on the one hand, poor people are at risk because they develop appendicitis imperceptibly, on the other hand, these people are more likely to get complications during and after surgery treatment.
In fact, surgery is usually refrain from people who have had serious complications after previous operations, or people with mental disabilities.
As it happens and what to do
The classic symptoms of appendicitis are:
- severe pain in the lower right abdomen (it happens that the pain starts in the middle of the navel, and then goes down);
- loss of appetite;
- nausea and vomiting;
- increase in body temperature.
Some people have a little bit different:
- heavy stomach, heartburn or eructation;
- unusually severe bloating;
- delay stool;
- diarrhea;
- feeling of illness and weakness.
After the start of appendicitis to rupture of the appendix may pass only 24 hours. After breaking the surgeon has cut the whole abdomen from the top - down. So if suspected at something similar, then quickly seek medical help, not treated yourself and do not wait.
