Researchers from Vanderbilt University and the Salk Institute said that the brains of people who are predisposed to alcoholism, originally otherwise respond to the action of alcohol. This difference in neural response and could be key to understanding the emergence of alcoholism.
Scientists have long sought to find out why some people have a craving for alcohol, while others - not. About 30% of drinkers become dependent, which is very difficult to treat.
In the new study, research assistants reviewed the neurophysiological bases of addictive behavior. The researchers observed the mice and found that they, like the people, the style of alcohol consumption are divided into "malopyuschy", "drinkers without serious consequences" and "compulsive alcoholics."
Researchers monitored the activity of neurons of animals using calcium imaging with cellular resolution. Luminescence induced neuronal activity was recorded through a microscope. The degree of luminosity showed neuron is activated or inhibited in response to the intake of alcohol. The activity was analyzed in the first alcohol and further as the occurrence (or non-arising) addiction.
It was found that mice that were predisposed to drinking when consuming alcohol, neurons reduced their activity, and those who have relationship could hardly develop, on the contrary - "Dispersed". In this case, such a difference in neural response was recorded even at the first use of alcohol, when the dependence develop more could not.
Based on these results the team has built a new behavioral model and identified cortical neural stem-loop. This circuit also serves as a biomarker for binge drinking and cellular basis of its development.
