A certain group of drugs increases the risk of an unfavorable course of coronavirus.

Researchers from the University of Brooklyn have published a preprint (released before official publication) of an article on drugs that significantly increase the risk of death from the virus COVID-19.

As a result of the study, scientists have proven that dangerous in terms of the course of coronavirus are drugs prescribed by doctors for ulcers, gastritis and heartburn (the so-called proton inhibitors pump).

Among patients who survived the severe course of coronavirus, 15.6% took drugs of this group on an ongoing basis. The mortality rate among them was 2.3 times higher than the mortality rate among those who did not take such medications for at least several months.
In addition, patients with gastritis and ulcers were 2.5 times more likely to be connected to a ventilator.

Proton pump blockers, according to scientists, reduce the content of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice, which helps the virus avoid neutralization by it. Taking such drugs makes the stomach more vulnerable, and also changes the intestinal microflora, helping the virus.
